Hypersomnia is a neurological disorder of excessive time spent sleeping or excessive sleepiness. It can have many possible causes such as seasonal affective disorder[1] and can cause distress and problems with functioning.[2] In the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), hypersomnolence, of which there are several subtypes, appears under sleep-wake disorders.[3]

Hypersomnia is a pathological state characterized by a lack of alertness during the waking episodes of the day.[4] It is not to be confused with fatigue, which is a normal physiological state.[5] Daytime sleepiness appears most commonly during situations where little interaction is needed.[6]

Since the patients’ attention levels are impaired, their quality of life may be impacted as well.[7] This is especially true for people whose jobs request high levels of attention, for example in the healthcare field.[7] Indeed, the lack of attention can cause injuries to self or others, which makes this disorder a real public health issue.[7]

I was diagnosed with Atypical Major Depressive disorder and I've been sleeping over 14 hours a day the past 2 months. I try to fix it by setting alarms, but I feel deathly tired all day when I do this and even when I sleep over 12+ hours I still feel tired. This is such a tough condition to live with, and I'm hoping once I can get my depression under control that this will subside.

Thanks, it was a really well explained and detailed video, I was wondering what's wrong with me. I felt so sleepy despite having more than 8 hrs of sleep.

I've been suffering from hypersomnia, insomnia, major depressive disorder, social anxiety disorder, and post-traumatic stress for most of my life and my recommendation to anyone suffering from these things should seek help as early as possible as it will get increasingly difficult as these conditions progress.
There are also many things you can do yourself without medication that can improve most psychological conditions like meditation, physical exercise, and social interactions. Isolation can greatly worsen these conditions.

EDIT: Some clarification is needed; I was never tested or officially diagnosed with a hypersomnia condition, I was merely told by a physician that it was possible that I had hypersomnia but it never reached a point where proper testing was done and diagnosis was considered, therefore it would be incorrect to phrase my above statement as if I've had hypersomnia when there isn't a diagnosis for it.

My hypersomnia is not sudden, just the onset of a daytime drowsiness where I decide I need to go nap. 1 nap a day is nothing surprising for a 70 year old guy, but sometimes 2 or 3 naps is not uncommon. My sleep is most often 8 hours or so. My symptoms began in earnest during Covid, and now remain.

I usually sleep 12-15 hours and can't control it, I often feel sleepy the whole day and can't think straight. And because of this, I'm scared to sleep if i need to be early in class tomorrow. A reason why I'm always absent and can't do good in school. I really hate this.😔

my sleep has been up so i decided to get a smart watch to track my sleep. found out i spend 40% to 50% of my sleep cycle in deep sleep, which is much higher than the normal amount from what i can glean. i feel better fighting off sleep than i do when i get a full night of sleep. its a nightmare tbfh

I think I caused myself to have this. I sleep at 5 AM because I feel like I can do something more than I could in the day.

Bro I slept 14 hours and then took a nap during the day. This happens to me randomly but mostly when I have nothing to do and I let my body do it's things and sometimes it just decides to oversleep.

I just want to share something that might help. I suffered from hypersomnia for almost 6 years and couldn't find a solution to treat it. I read somewhere that avoiding sugar and gluten might help. I tried it, and within a few days, I started feeling better when waking up. My overall feeling improved. Just avoid sugar, gluten, and oil.

Here's what I eat in a day, along with exercise:

Rice
Egg
Fish (cooked without oil)
Vegetables
Fruits (avoid very sweet fruits)
