My hubby and three of our six adult children were diagnosed with a multisystemic neurological wasting disease. The first diagnosis came when the youngest was 23 yrs old, just over a decade ago. All of them have steadily declining health. Mostly, I am OK taking it a day at a time, but every now and then, there is a crisis, I cope, but when things settle down, it hits me very hard.
It is a rare illness so many Drs have never seen it and want to give treatment that is contraindicated, so I've had to learn as much as I can about to be able to respectfully point the Drs to the right information and research. Being their advocate as well as a loved one is a big responsibility.
There is also a level of cognitive decline and the well people don't get it.
