Ah my favorite survival fire starting method. So flexible, and easy. So many different materials you could substitute. For the cotton most natural fibers will work just fine. Fluff from hummingbird nests, dryer lint, part of your shirt, insulation from a coat, dry zippo filling, cotton wood seed fluff, cattail seed fibers, etc. Same goes for the ashes/friction component. As mentioned rust also works, iron oxide collected by a magnet, activated charcoal from any source (hand warmers, air filters, water filters), iron shavings, flint shavings, steel wool, walnut husk, pumice, aspirin, I’m sure there are more. For your flat surfaces the options are also just as extensive as long as the surfaces are not slippery and do not conduct heat very efficiently. Materials to do this method could be randomly gathered from just about anywhere.

Glad I never leave home without my trusty pile of rust.

Given how strong this man is, judging from how he cut that wood, I bet he's able to squeeze fire out of it with his bare hand.

I'm still stuck at how you can cut down a thick branch EVENLY with a pocket knife.

Already know I keep cotton balls ready to go when I’m out in the woods

Never considered rust as flamable.
Good to know! Thank you!

I learned this at age 13 at bad boys bootcamp. Army guys trained more like tortured the bad kids with army type exercises and calisthenics that make people puke. They also showed us how to survive in the bush with nothing. How to start fire this way is very easy. I remember doing it to keep warm in minus 30 degree we were thrown out of truck and told to figure it out. Dumped us off in middle of grizzly country and said figure it out. For 7 days we were alone with nothing but our pack and plastic sheet to make a hootchie tent. Fun times. Thank you corrections British Columbia. I learned alot.

Love this, , when I was working as a Volunteer for Homeland Security in the Great desert of Arizona on Mexican Border I took as many classes on Desert Survival I could find. Most bags of Potato Chips will light up w a spark did to the oils in them. You get a snack & a fire.. lol

I've seen alot of fire starting videos and started quite a few myself. I have never seen anything quite like this and it's awesome. You'd think this would be more common than others due to the fact it's much simpler.

Screw the sharpness of the knife. This is the absolute most amazing way to start a fire especially in a survival situation... Cotton and rust or... ASH!? So you can literally start a fire with the remains of a dead fire!? This is incredible! Earned a sub from me.
Oh and a reminder to get a tetanus shot if you're going to be messing with rust.
