Using cordage and a wedge, you can use a split piece of wood for a hearth board for bowdrill, as long as you burn in at the end of the board.

What is the advantage of this over a regular notched board? Seems like more places for failure

Interesting concept. I still need to find the opportunity to practice friction fires but I think I might prefer this as a way to put less wear on a knife blade when compared to cutting a v notch
