Solar Surge will teach you all about being energy independent and how to set up your home to run off-the-grid during an emergency. We empower families to take control of their energy generation and storage so that they will never be left in the dark without electricity.

In this video, Joe breaks down the California Public Utility Commission's decision to change the solar net-metering rules.

I would start first by making your house the most energy efficient possible. Lots of insulation in the attic (R30 and higher), good windows, etc. and making sure your roof is well ventilated. I installed a power ventilator on my parent's roof and it made a huge difference in the hot summer. A/C doesn't run near as much and house seems to stay cooler longer.

Thanks for the heads up, Joe. Our solar(with backup battery) installation was just completed and we're awaiting city final inspection. Our sales guy mentioned the possible coming changes in the net-metering rules, here in California. Glad we didn't put off getting solar until later next year. Thanks again.

I own a solar company in California.
At the present state of battery tech, the ROI's for full storage (off grid, essentially) is so long, the batteries themselves need replacing before you start to get in the black.
We need better batteries!
I will make sure my salesmen are fully armed with a copy of the PUC decisions....will help boost sales in the short run.
THANK YOU.

Thank you so much for keeping up on solar news nationally. This is why I subscribe.

I love it when I see homeowners excited about their solar system regardless of the CPUCs decision 🥰

I can understand only getting paid 70-80% because the power company still needs to maintain the infrastructure, but only paying wholesale prices is complete BS. I'd guess you can follow the campaign donations to figure out how this happened.

This is what I have learned. There are States that electric rates are very high and they push solar to help save you money.I moved out of NY where my electric was 300 a month.Oil heat in winter .Now I live in NC and my house is twice the size. I have a heat pump that heats and cools my house.Always less than 100 a month. And it’s hot down here in the summer. No one down here has solar

Knew this was coming, our installer gave us a heads up about the pending changes. Had solar installed January 2022. So far this year no usage charges, just the fixed charges. Hopefully battery backup 2023.

I think that the Net Metering system was originally setup to encourage residential solar systems. However, if the utility is forced to buy solar power during the day at full retail price, at times when the utility may not need the power, then credit you power in the evening when demand is at the highest, how do they make a profit to pay for their overhead? Using the utilities as a Free battery doesn't seem fair to the other rate payers that are not able to afford solar or don't have the ability to install solar (apartments). These rate payers will have to pay more for their utility power to offset the loss that the utility is forced to take on the Net Metering system. Someone has to pay for the infrastructure and maintenance and other administrative costs of running a power system. With your own battery system, you take responsibility for time shifting your electrical power production to the time that you want to use it.

If they're buying it at 6-8 cents and charging us $0.30, then there's the real problem. Crooks.

@1:45 Sell excess solar generated power back to the utilities at "Full Price Credit" - ABSOLUTELY NOT TRUE!!!

• For Southern California Edison, excess generated power is bought back from the consumer by the utility at WHOLESALE rates!!!
• It is never 1:1 at reatil prices!!!
• The difference between wholesale and retail rates, what SCE charges consumers, is significant!!!

We're in NY and have net metering but expecting the same thing will eventually happen here. It's good to know CA grandfathered in the existing customers for 20 years. Does CA still have this program for battery storage: 'In California, the Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) is a rebate worth between $150 and $1, 000 per kWh of battery storage installed for eligible residential projects. This rebate is available after the battery storage is installed and, in some cases, can cover the entire amount of the project.' Sep 27, 2022

I have designed a circuit board that allows us to connect microinverters to batteries so that we can store our energy, without paying for Enphase's expensive battery solution. I would love for you to review my product.

They were already not giving paypack kilowatt for kilowatt - my rate for electricity until 3 pm is 20 cents per kWh and after 3 pm - it is 50 cents per kWh which meant that PGE buys solar production at 20 cents per kWh but sells it back to you at 50 kWh. It was this math that prompted me to get Tesla powerwall last year.

Thanks for very informative video, 2 questions to be answered:
1) todays Net Metering program, doesn’t do the accounting in daily basis, but does it after full year. I.e., they calculate all the number of units you generated for full year and subtract the total amount of units you consumed full year and send you a bill for only excess units at the end of the year. They call it true up charges.
This means that we are getting benefits of storing for entire year. Which cannot be replaced by buying battery. Since battery will be charged to capacity in summer we will be good for nights of summer but what about winters, we won’t be getting enough power generated in the day so we will be ending up using PGE power and pay their high prices.
Battery is not going to be exactly same as what we have today.

2) what happens if we already have the system but it’s too small and we want to add more panels in future, would the grandfathering rule be applied to the new higher system?

Please clarify these points.

You forgot to mention that the storage is not 1:1 because you need more power to charge the battery then the power it produce. You lose about 30% energy. Lucky in my state they do 1:1 net metering so the grid store my excess energy and get back at night for the same energy produce. I only pay if I use more that I produce. Thanks for the video explaining about the new California solar program.

As an SDG&E customer, I already got changed to a less desirable plan when I added into my system. Got switched to a TOU plan instead of straight net metering. Plus they block peak shaving with batteries.

Thanks for clarifying tips on solar, especially the new CPUC decision here in California.
I was panicking regarding this upcoming change, our solar installer assured us that this would not affect us.
Our system was over a month delayed, however completed the day after the CPUC approved. I received notice yesterday 12/19/2022 from SoCal Edison that we are approved and have (PTO) permission to operate.

Thanks Again
