Solar is Not Dead in California... Net Metering 3.0 Explained

Net Energy Metering may be “dead” but solar is not. For many of us in the industry it came as a shock that the California Public Utilities Commission voted to proceed with the changes to Net Energy Metering for the major utility provides Southern California Edison, San Diego Gas and Electric, and Pacific Gas and Electric.

I’m sure if you’re watching this you’ve been told by a solar representative or you’ve seen marketing that you have to go solar now or before April 15th, 2023. While this is true to some degree, don’t be pressured into jumping in to bed with someone because they’re screaming its the end of days… it’s not but you probably should consider going solar before this cut off date and I’m going to explain why in this video.

Solar in California is certainly dead with NEM 3.0.

If it's not "dead" then explain how is it cost effective and how NEM 3.0 effects us in California please. Are there any pros to it when tied in with PG & E? Does it still payback or is it simply a reduction in grid usage which lowers our electricity bill? With a 10kw limit this doesn't get us away from PG & E but keeps them in the loop and be subject to them. I'd like to just shitcan them or just quit the solar push for homesbuilders being forced to participate. Many piss on PG & E yet on the solar end, the forced dependency is overkill.

From my most recent electric bill Peak times (winter rates) are as follows:
=$0.39848 /kwh Delivery + $0.14268/kwh Generation = 54 cents/kwh for electricity at peak times (aka. 4-9pm when we are at home and have no other choice but to use their power...unless of course you have batteries).
YIKES! I believe this is likely the most expensive rates in the US? I guess they have to pay the exorbitant salaries of their executives whose salaries btw in 2021 for Sempra (parent company of SDGE) were as follows:
Sempra 2021: 21M/yr.
SDGE 2021: 10M/yr.
Don't know about you but I'd agree to do the job for a half of either of those salaries and would probably do a better job.
Also burns me that we the rate payers are paying for the lawsuits that came as a result of the fires. So we are paying for their incompetence and mistakes that led to the fire. No consequences whatsoever for the power companies all while their executives make record salaries through bonuses, etc.

BTW, I'm still puzzled why SDGE's Electric Delivery rates in the winter are 13 cents higher then delivery rates in the summer. Does it cost more to send electricity down a cold line than a warm line...it's all using the same exact grid in both seasons.

So we lost 75% of solar overproduction credits either you have to get 7 to 10 extra panels or buy a 15 K battery what this means is anybody with a 200 $300 bill will not get solar only somebody with a $500 bill makes sense now, so Solar is almost dead

Ive got a DIY system where I live in Oklahoma. My Electric Cooperative just talked to me on the phone and had me email my inverter specs and Kw sizing. CA sure does suck.

NEM 3 will add SIGNIFICANT cost to solar. As a PG&E. customer I just added more panels while still in NEM2. All the extra solar that I’m generating in the daytime will be credited by PG&E. at around 40 cents per KW. With NEM 3 they would only give me 8 cents per KW. In a sense PG&E is acting as “free” storage under NEM 2. The only way around it is to spend over $30k on battery storage or add a significant amount more panels to generate enough credits at 8 cents. I do agree with you that if you have an EV adding panels under NEM 3 and charging in the daytime is an option. You still have to do the math. As an example, compare the cost of a Toyota Camry to a Tesla Model 3 and then add the thousands to add panels, chargers, etc and the EV argument doesn’t make much financial sense either.

The problem with NEEM 3.0 is it almost doubles the payback time from around 4-5 yrs to 10+ yrs. For old seniors it is a disincentive. I’m currently under NEEM 2.0 but I’m planning on moving to an independent living senior community I’m no longer keen to put in solar panels on any house I get there. It will take awhile to get the right house. April 13 deadline to submit an Interconnection application is too early for someone like me.

D2D Solar Reps in Cali have the Ultimate dead line as Michael O'Donnell craves. Virtual Solar reps will just go switch states April 14th, lol.

Do you know if any other fees will be applied to California home owners for going solar ? Today

I think it is pre-mature to say NEM3.0 will not kill solar in California. There are a lot of factors affecting it such as battery shortage, battery price increases due to new demand. We will not see the effect until 2024. I expect at least a significant dip in solar installation in 2024, and coupled with the recession, whether the solar companies can survive it remains to be seen.

So not having any solar now, if you do get it and make it under the 15 April grandfather NEM 2.0 cutoff, do you really still need battery storage? Or do you still get the battery as you can draw from it and use your own generated electricity at night and peak times rather than drawing from PG&E?

I installed 2 solar PV systems, 1 in 2017, 1 last year. PG&E would NOT accept my NEM application until I had my building permit finalled( final sign off). Here in Monterey County you need your System built and permitted by your local ahj first.

AC200max power station with a manual transfer only requires 900w on solar system. Will reduce cost by 75% off your utility bill. Only thing drawing from PG&E are 240 volt circuits Pool pump & A/C condensing unit. Screw bring tied to PG&E, you can't win between True up and them not paying when you feed the grid! This is the best option. AC200 max 2048whb 2200 inverter 4000 peak surge. For way less than 5k

So LA DWP has not been affected by any M3.0?

This video was hugely relieving as I’m waiting for a 200 amp panel upgrade. We have solar installed already but it’s nowhere near getting completed soon.
Can you do a video on the new green book standards that are making the process of upgrading one’s panel, harder and harder?

"You will have to buy an all electric or plug-in hybrid wearher you like it or not" wrong! You can buy used gas cars, or new ones from other states.

Thanks for the update. I just added 8 panels and a battery to my 16-panel system. BTW, SDG&E rates are $.22163 currently for all 3-time frames. (Winter rates) with the rates due to be raised at the first of the year. My point, he who hesitates on getting Solar is going to be sorry.

I am struggling to find the answer hopefully you can help me. I want solar on my small business which is zoned as professional offices.... Is the NEM 2.0 program deadline only for Residential or can it be used on Commercial locations?
