WHY YOUR SKIN TONES SUCK: WHITE BALANCE a7iii a7riii

We know the Sony cameras have been known to have okay skin tones but the a7iii and a7riii's new color science is a huge improvement. Going from a photographer to a filmmaker early on I never understood the importance of setting my white balance in camera. I want to save you time making the mistakes I made early on. Setting up your white balance in camera will save you time in post correcting colors and give you more flattering skin tones out of your Sony cameras. I'll show you how to set a custom white balance in your Sony alpha camera and how to use Gary Fong's Color reference white balance tools. I use this method on my sony a7iii and a7riii every time I start filming or take portrait photos.

I have to confess – I never set custom white balance but I really need to do it for my future projects. I do have a basic question on that: Let's say I'm shooting in one and the same environment but shooting my subject in different angles so the light source will come from different directions. Do I have to set the white balance for each angle separately? I hope not. This would take away a lotta flexibility you need during documentary shoots.

I’ve done that when Gary first came out with them. But I’ve learned that using grays are for exposure, not for white balance.
