My american akita is (almost) the perfect dog. I have socialized him since he was a puppy and I take him with me most places. Although he doesn't like most other male (or dominant) dogs, he is able to coexist, this is his only qualm. He is an amazing natural guardian and has the best judge of character I've seen in any dog. He is wary of strangers, but celebrates when he sees people he knows and loves. He is calm and respectful. He doesn't bark unless there is a good reason and he isn't destructive when he's bored. He was also born potty trained. I am a professional dog trainer and animal behaviorist, I've never experienced this kind of bond with any other animal. He would die for me. All I can say is: socialize the akita, socialize it and you will be hard pressed to find a better companion. A little extra exercise never hurt either!

We pick our baby boy up this Friday, deep down I’m nervous but we are also very excited… When you tell people you are getting a Akita it’s about the same as telling someone you’re getting a lion

I’ve had mine for 12 years now and have been in love with the breed the whole time. Amazing dogs to have.

One of the best explanations of the breed's paradoxical traits and personality - big and tough but yet very emotionally sensitive like a kitten, gentle as a lamb in the home but ruthlessly efficient as a total bad ass hunter killer in the field, devoted but aloof, intelligent but disobedient - it is the complexities, contrasts and many layers to their personalities which make these dogs so damn addictive. Living with such a dog is like living with an alien intelligence or a sentient being as a room mate. They are very good at communicating what they want and excel at making you do their bidding but they are also the most loyal selfless and devoted breed bar none. They can be sniffing flowers one minute and killing a pack of coyotes the next - they are lethally violent yet excellent therapy dogs - they will play with other dogs when young yet they may try to kill the same dogs when they become sexually mature. They may tolerate pets they are raised with yet disembowel every racoon, squirrel and possum they can catch. These are like highly educated and sensitive samurai, self-aware, loyal and totally committed to total war if attacked, challenged or dishonored. They live by a their own code and they have a wild side which can never be fully domesticated or socialized or trained out of them. They learn what you want them to do very quickly but they may choose not to behave unless they feel like it at the moment. An Akita is more like a person at times than a dog because of their huge bold personalities - they literally are great company and they will call the shots if you let them just like a human roommate.

My Akita passed away in 2007. It took me about 10 years to feel ready to have another dog. I'm glad I had him when I was in my 20s. I had to carry him on my own on his final days. I wouldn't be able to do that now. He was everything you described. An outstanding dog...

I raised an Akita-mute from 8 weeks old. Toughest dog to train. I almost gave up more than once. But now she's a gem! She's trained as service dog, sled dog, and guardian. She always reminds me that her primary duty is guardian, but she does her other jobs gladly like hauling my propane tanks in, and groceries.
I live on a homestead and I could not do without her.
She also is WONDERFUL with children intuitively. I would say if you have immense patience to initially train them, you will be rewarded. Very loyal and devoted. Feel safe anywhere I go with her.

Hi, my 6 month old american akita Freddie Kruger is just the most amazing pup ever. He is clever but is really stubborn as well. There are 2 rules he absolutely has to abide by, and does. !) He has to wait until I say he can eat, WITHOUT EXCEPTION and at anytime I can take away his food.
2) He cannot go out of the door before me. He absolutely must not barge his way into or out of my space. definately a work in progress.

This dog is absolutely incredible. He keeps me on my toes every day. I have severe mental health problems and this little boy is already my saviour.
Everyone should have a "Freddie"
Many thanks to all at Fenrir you all helped (literally) save me.
Love from Les and Freddie xxxx

I had an Akita/Newfoundland mix. 120 pounds of furry love! She looked like a black bear and had the traits of both breeds. She was so loved by all who met her. She had more people at her funeral than many humans do. She is buried next to her wolf dog boyfriend in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Love you forever Maggie!

Little story how my Akita Inu maybe saved my life. When Akiyama my Akita was approximately 2 year’s old i went like everyday at around 11:30 short before midnight on my last pee with him. We live near a big forest that has smack in the middle a old big building used for boy scout activities. When the house is not used for the boy scouts it’s rented to folks who mostly do small parties there like birthday parties and so on. That night when i entered the woods i immediately heard loud music and saw from far people standing around the house enjoying themselves. This is something i witnessed many times before. To see better in the dark forest i have always a flashlight with me. When i reached the building, Akiyama went deeper in to the woods to release himself. I waited and watched the people at the house. I saw two young man approaching me who asked me if i have a cigarette. I said friendly no and thought they will walk away. Than they asked if i could give them some coins. Again i said sorry folks im walking my dog and have nothing with me. Than before i could realize one of them started to grab me from behind while the other guy started to punch me and telling me to give him my wallet. I still hade my flashlight in hand and used it to hit the guy holding me from behind. Now there attack got more vicious, and both of them started to kick and box me in to submission. I panicked because they we’re quite strong, but still i was using my flashlight to give them painful blows. While doing so it came to my mind i could call Akiyama who was quite far away still doing his business. Maybe because the loud music he did not hear immediately my fight with the two young man. So while both still kicking and boxing me i screamed as loud as i could for my Dog. No one from the party folks intervened or tried to help. I hade to help myself. After i screamed Akiyama with all my might, i saw how finally he realized something is going on and came running towards me. Almost immediately Akiyama attacked the guy holding me from behind and started to bite him in the leg. The guy was utterly shocked because they did not realize my Dog was that big. Akiyama went berserk on him and he immediately stopped grabbing me and started to kick Akiyama. His friend tried to help him get rid of Akiyama who still was holding on his leg and wiggling left and right. With each wiggle the guy screamed loudly. When i saw both of them trying to kick Akiyama i took again my flashlight and started to hit as strong as i can on both of them to make them stop kicking Akiyama. While kicking Akiyama did let go one of them and attacked the other guy who was bitten in the arm and leg to. When they realized my flashlight and Akiyama is making there life’s miserable they took off running. At first Akiyama wanted to run after them but i was afraid they may stab him or something so i started to hold him back and leashed him. Maybe Akiyama saved my life this night. Later on i called the police at home and tried to find this two fellows but they we’re never found sadly. I still hope Akiyama was able to hurt them.

Everything you said is exactly true.
My akita is 2 years old. I’m not a professional trainer, but I can get the connection easily with almost any dog. I wanted a dog, that’s a challange to me. Well, i found the perfect breed. 😀 it was month of training to teach her not react to dogs and people who are talking to us. (Now she’s walking next to me wonderfully). Looking back to the past 2 years and bond we managed to build with each other is just amazing. I know that i’m always going to have a dog next to me in my life, but I don’t think I ever want to try any different breed, altough it was a long and tiring road to have a reliable obidience. I’ve learn’t just as much from her, as she did from me.

By far the best breed of dog out there. The relationship you get with an Akita is like no other. An I've owned several different breeds of dog. I absolutely adored my Akita💙

Everything you stated is very true. I had one Akita and do not wish to have any other breed but an Akita. The best dog ever!

This is a spot on! Explains the Akita perfectly. One thing I'd also like to throw in there is that they are really lazy. I'm talking bulldog lazy. They have relaxing down to a fine art. They are up for walks/hikes daily but also more than happy to just sleep 23 hours a day. Hence some of the feline characteristics. Sleep, preen, sleep, eat, sleep, walk, sleep, patrol house, sleep, repeat. If you live in a colder climate these dogs are perfect 👌 Our girl is a furslug all summer but when the snow flies she is like a puppy again. Our girl is also great being left alone. No neurotic tendencies or destruction. She just sleeps while we are at work. Do your research before getting one because they aren't for everyone, but no dog has stolen my heart like this magnificent breed.

Thank you so much for your kind truthful words on this breed which not everyone understands nor takes the time to understand.
They just look at how cute the puppy is in the window.
You are right; I am on my 3 Akita and I seriously doubt if I will ever have a different breed in my house hold.
