I Quit smoking cigarettes a year ago. Best decision I ever made. I had bronchitis and pneumonia at the same time last year and it almost killed me. You don’t realize how bad your lungs are until you get sick and can’t fight it off.
I grew up with a family of chain smokers on my dad’s side. They’re all dead now.

For anyone wondering,
An estimated 23 percent of heavy smokers will never reach the age of 65. Heavy smoking also decreases your life expectancy by about 10 -13 years. SO DONT SMOKE!

Started smoking in high school because of peer pressure (my ex and friends). I just turned 25 and I’m about to complete my first year of being smoke free. My lungs have never felt better. I even got my energy back. I’m dating this wonderful woman who has supported through this journey, 3 years together and she has helped me quit smoking

I stopped smoking since 2011. I was a smoker for over 25 years....since early teens. The best way to stop smoking, as in my experience, is to go for early morning jogging. Breathing fresh cold air will not only improve your lung capacity but also exposes you to fresh oxygen air which you have been depriving your body for long. After jogging for a few days, your body will start to dislike smoke and you can easily quit thereafter. I tried this method twice successfully. I quit for six months the first time but i was a fool to start it again after stopping jogging... but the second time i went with my bodys wish to stay away from smoke....forever.

it's not that the cilia (hair-like structures) on the surface of the respiratory tract are killed, but the cells on the surface actually undergo metaplasia, a process wherein the ciliated surface turns into a squamous surface withiout cilia (similar to the skin, vagina etc.). this is the body's way to make your respiratory tract more resistant to the physical damage cigarette smoke is causing. cilia are what sweeps up the dirt accumulated in your tract to be expelled through your mouth, and without them, anything that enters your throat has a higher chance of being lodged and stay in there, making you more prone to infections. this switching of cell type is also a risk factor for cancer.

My dad was a heavy smoker. I got PTB due to 2nd hand smoking.

He got PTB, then escalated to Emphysema then COPD.

By his 50s, he's gotten weaker. By 60s, walking a few steps to the bathroom was like a marathon for him.
We had to keep on buying oxygen tanks, then we shifted to electric powered oxygen machine.

He got too many medications too. Managing COPD was no joke, his lungs were getting smaller as time goes by. He couldn't get out, spend some time vacation. He was at home, it felt like a prison for him.

One day, my sister called me saying our dad wanted to go to the hospital, but they told him it was difficult. It was a few months after the pandemic lock downs.

They thought our dad was just overreacting. We were always in a hospital every time he gets a flu or a cold. Straight to ICU and ER and we always get home with the same diagnosis - flu or cold.

They thought it was one of those instances. They were wrong. He fell back on his bed and told me he was sleeping, but they couldn't wake him up.

Nobody knew how to do CPR, they called 911 late. I got there first, did a CPR, broke few of his ribs but I knew it was too late.

PS. Thanks for the comforting words. I really appreciate it.
We may not be able to change other people's beliefs, but reminding them how much we care for them does help.
It's the same with my dad, we never reminded him of the cause of his illness. That's the doctor's job, we just took care of him while he was alive.

Fact: even if you aren't a smoker you are not free of these problems if you've had heavy smoker parents, family members or friends. It's not gonna be as bad as it is to them, but it'll still cause you issues

Another factor that makes cigarettes hard to breathe is the accumulation of Carbon Monoxide sticking to your RBC, which is difficult to remove than Carbon Dioxide.

This also makes it hard for RBC to collect Oxygen. So systematically, you have to breathe harder

For those wondering:
Vaping is less harmful than smoking, but it's still not safe. E-cigarettes heat nicotine (extracted from tobacco), flavorings and other chemicals to create an aerosol that you inhale. Regular tobacco cigarettes contain 7, 000 chemicals, many of which are toxic. The fact that many vapes are so accessible now days makes them very dangerous. Stay safe
