Not once did he explain that "cent" comes from the Latin for 100 (as in 100 cents = 1 dollar) and "per" can be taken to mean "for every" (as in 30mph = 30 miles for every hour). Thus the question becomes "if it's 3 out of 8, what would that be for every hundred?" We therefore need to convert 8 to 100, which is easily done by multiplying 8 by 100/8 (8 x 100/8 = 100). What we do to the 8 to convert it to 100 we must also do to the 3. Hence 3 x 100/8 = 37.5. So 3 for every 8 is the same as 37.5 for every 100, or 37.5%.

37.5% straight off. As an engineering apprentice in the 60s, I had to learn the decimal equivalents for all fractions of an inch from 1/64th through to 63/64ths. 3/8ths is 0.375 thus 37.5%. You will struggle to catch out anyone in their 70s with essentially mental arithmetic questions.

37.5 Cross multiply & divide. That’s how I learned it in Jamaica.

37.5% 100 divided by 8 = 12.5 3 times 12.5 equals 37.5 If 8 is 100% of 8 then 12.5 x 8 equals 100% so 12.5 x 3 =37.5 percent of the 8. Or you could just 3 divided by 8 equals .375 which is (37.5/100) or (37.5%)

I always do proportion method which is easiest for me to understand. 3/8 = X/100. So (3x100)/8 = Answer in %. Therefore, 3 x 100 = 300. So 300 ÷ 8 = 37.5 Answer = 37.5%

I'm not a mathematician, but was unspectacularly good at maths at school half a century ago. I found this easy, because I figured out a very long time ago and never forgot that 1 is 12.5% of 8. Next, 12.5x3=37.5, ergo 3 is 37.5% of 8.

3 divided by 8 times 100 equals 37.5 percent

I solved this in three seconds after reading it.I worked as a machinist and know the decimal equivalents up to 64ths

One eigth equals 0.125. Thus 3 out of 8 equals 0.375. The result is 37.5%.
It took some seconds to calculate without pen and paper including the validation of the result.

It's good to have the basics.
I was once called out at 2am because the operator of a machine was having trouble. He had to convert a quarter into a decimal and got 0.025 from his calculator. He thought the computer was broken because it wouldn't take his parameters.

The way I worked it out is that 3/8=x/100 then cross multiply to get x=300/8= 37.5

The way I do it is 3over 8 times 100 over one. Nice i enjoy it

Well if you slice off about a third of the left hand side of a figure 8 then you get a figure 3, so about 65%.

In other words express 3/8 as a percentage.
3/8 x 100 0.375 x 100 37.5 %
