Ancient Egyptian Mythology: Summary of the birth Osiris and his siblings
Before the Egyptian goddess of the sky, Nut (pronounced: Newt) had given birth to five children (some sources say she had only four but in this animation I went based off of the version of the myth I remember), Ra was the head ruler. Ra) was the creator god in Ancient Egyptian mythology. When Nut was pregnant Ra found out about the news and was furious. Out of pure anger and worrying for his throne he put a curse on Nut (which by the way fun Fact: Nut is his granddaughter). Ra felt that he was the only rightful ruler and thought that if Nut gave birth one of her children or descendants would take the throne from him. So he cursed Nut to never be able to give birth to her children. Not on any night or day of any year. When Nut heard of this curse that had befallen her she was devastated. Thoth (the ancient Egyptian god of wisdom and writing), saw that she was heartbroken at the news of the curse. He wanted to help lift her spirits but also knew that Ra was the leader of the gods and bringer of the curse hence no one could break it. Thoth then got an idea. He went to the Egyptian god Khonsu (the ancient Egyptian god of the moon) and asked him to play a game. Thoth knew that Khonsu was one who likes to gamble. So Khonsu accepted Thoth’s request and even gambled by saying that since he (Khonsu) was the best person at playing the game there is no way that Thoth could win, but if Thoth did win (Khonsu) would give some of his light to Thoth. They started playing and it went on for a few rounds. Thoth kept winning. When it seemed Thoth was ready to leave Khonsu told him to wait and that his (Khonsu’s) luck was just beginning. He also stated that he was sure to win the next round. They kept playing. Thoth kept winning. And when he left Khonsu after thanking him for allowing him to play with (Khonsu), Thoth had enough moonlight to last an entire year (360 days) plus five extra days. In those five Extra days Nut gave birth to her five children. One child was born on each day. She was able to finally give birth to her children (but on the five days), because those five (extra) days were not (yet) part of the year. Hence the curse could not take effect on those five days, making it so Nut could finally give birth to her children. This is also a myth behind why the moon (Khonsu) no longer shines as bright and brilliantly as it (he) used to. (Side note: Thoth knew that Khonsu would gamble his light, so he used that as a way to go around the curse and help Nut have a chance to give life to her children. Also Thoth cared about Nut).
