Living in Florida for decades, I've been in the parh of several hurricanes. I had the eye of a hurricane pass over me three times. Most people don't understand them. If it is a Cat 1 or 2, as long as you aren't near or on the water, for the most part, they are harmless. A category 3 will blow weak things, like knock down dead trees, blow lose roof tiles, etc. So when it gets to a Cat 3, stay in doors because flying objects or trees falling on power lines can be dangerous. Once it reaches a Cat 4, you have to evacuate, because it can damage, and take roofs off buildings, and even destroy them. So it is no longer safe in doors with a Cat 4. If it is a Cat 5, it will flatten houses in its wake like a tornado, and send all its pieces flying, often for miles.

Another thing people don't understand about hurricanes is that the Cat rating is based on the force near the center. For example, a hurricane can be the size of Florida, but the more distance from the center, the weaker the winds. So the hurricane is large, but the path is narrow. So if they rate a hurricane as Cat 4, just because this huge radar object is passing over you, doesn't mean you are going to experience Cat 4 winds. Of the several hurricanes I experienced, I only evaluated once, then later I found out it was unnecessary.

This storm that devastated New Orleans around twenty yeats ago passed directly over me as a Cat 1 when I lived in Florida. Not only did I not evacuate, I watched it pass over while sitting on my balcony. But when it entered the gulf, it strengthened to a Cat 4, and I was thinking that they better get out of there.

My point is that hurricanes are very different depending on the Cat rating, and how close you are to the center. If this one is going to reach Cat 4, as they predict (while traveling over you), and you're in its potential path, you have to evacuate.
