CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin) is given the opportunity to bring the defecting Russian Captain in and get aboard the Red October.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
The first of several films based on Tom Clancy's "Jack Ryan" technothrillers, Hunt for Red October stars Alec Baldwin as eccentric CIA analyst Ryan and Sean Connery as Soviet submarine commander Marko Ramius. Ramius sets the plot in motion when he murders his political adviser, burns his orders, and steers his sub Red October towards American waters, hoping to defect. The CIA, aware that the Red October was about to embark on an evasive mission to demonstrate its ability to avoid detection and fire its nuclear missiles upon U.S. installations, believes that Ramius is insane, and that he plans to start World War III. To cover their own behinds, the Russians back up the CIA's suspicion. Only Jack Ryan believes that Ramius' mission is not as apocalyptic as it seems -- and it is Ryan who is assigned to infiltrate the Red October to prove his theory. The sort of film that in an earlier era would have been called a "thinking man's thriller," The Hunt for Red October ushered in a new series of Hollywood-produced post-Cold War adventure films, including 1995's Crimson Tide.

“Im a politician. That means I’m a liar and a cheat, and when I’m not kissing babies, I’m stealing their lollipops.” 😂 yup, that sounds about right. I love that line.

I will never get tired of this movie, and Richard Jordan was amazing in every part he ever played. We lost him far too soon.

I wish this clip had the "I said speak your mind Jack, but Jesus" line. That was hilarious.

"We're not talking about a stray pilot with a MiG."
I just love that Firefox reference.

I love Richard Jordan's line ..."I'm a politician which means I'm a cheat and liar".  :)

"I can't ask any of these characters to go." For some reason, that line never fails to make me chuckle.

I love Richard's Jordan's Jeffery Pelt. You can see the intelligence of a man who understands politics but who is consulting someone with specific expertise. He's truly American but he's considering all the angles at the same time. His mannerisms and facial expressions say as much as his dialogue. I never grow tired of watching scenes like that.

Watch HOW LONG the camera remains on Richard Jordan here. Impressive. Nowadays, with present actors, camera is on them for just a few seconds because they can't stay in character for longer. Richard Jordan does. Very good at his job.

The absolute best Cold War movie of the 80's.

When a simple dialogue scene like this could be said as one of the best scene in a movie, that qualifies a movie as a masterpiece! It's just in a room, 4-eyes meeting, no action scene, no effect / music background / fight / etc, just dialogues.

Love this scene. They don't know each other perse, but Jeffrey Pelt shows some respect to Ryan. "I'm a politician, which means I am a cheat and a liar, and when I am not kissing babies, I'm stealing their lollipops, but it also means I keep my options open...". Ryan is thinking "ok, this guy will at least listen to me."

I watch a lot of YT reactors who watch this movie and the vast majority all the say the same thing: "whoa this actor is REALLY good" when referring to Richard Jordan. He has so little time in the movie compared to many other characters but he really makes an impression. Characters like his in this movie are what I call "one-scene wonders" - and Jordan NAILS this character. RIP.

There's a third reason why Ryan is the best man to go. He wants to resolve this peacefully. Anyone else, they'll be suspicious and go in guns cocked. Ryan is the only one who knows the situation well enough, and has the mindset to make a potential ally out of an enemy.

He was asking Ryan:"If you have enough conviction to make such profound statements, as to Ramius possibly defecting, do you have the courage to see that your convictions are right? Thankfully enough, Ryan took him up on his offer, and found out that he was right about Ramius, after all!

"I'll give you three days to prove your theory correct, AFTER THAT, I have to hunt down Ramius and destroy him." That line or more accurately its delivery always sticks with me. It drips with a deadly sense of conviction and duty that belies the ostensibly 'cavalier politician' facade that Pelt puts up in the beginning of the scene. Amazing acting!
