Great scene in a movie filled with them. The DSRV is a perfect example of the dramatic storytelling concept known as, "Chekov's Gun."

Such a great movie; even the actors with small roles in it hit it out of the park. His last line here is really chilling. But I also have always liked his offhand remark about launching ICBM's horizontally; "sure...why would you want to?"

Principal Ed Rooney is one scary dude...

Few scenes in film history better convey the stakes - of the situation - but also the entire cold war. Jones and Baldwin are brilliant here.

The pan up showing the submarine is a pretty epic shot. This movie was so masterfully made.

So serious, it sends chills up my spine. Having been a child in the fifties and growing up through the sixties, this is a horrific memory of what we feared.

For anyone wondering, the submarine in this scene is actually the USS Permit, of the Thresher/Permit Class. The original namesake of which, USS Thresher, sank 60 years ago today as of positing this comment.
After the disaster the classes name was changed to Permit, after the second boat. They were truly revolutionary boats when they were Introduce in 1960.

3:07 the way he delivered that line is terrifying

I recently worked in a warehouse for about 3 months and was always reminded of this scene due to the excessive noise, ambience and overall harsh working conditions. So to keep myself amused while picking orders, I'd mutter "damn it Bill, tell em to slow down!"

And then is when it starts getting serious. Great movie, definitely one of my top five ever. Great scene, too!

Baldwin was so good as Ryan. I still see him as Ryan on my re-reads of the books. Wish he'd kept going in the role.

"Park" is a military term for locking in a certain area before launching a strike.

1:05 the way skip rooney shouts "slow down!" always reminds me of rob schneider shouting "prepare for dive!" in down periscope.
