James Earl Jones is utterly astounding. Phenomenal voice and presence.

I much prefer Jack Ryan in this film. He felt like an ordinary man with a great ability who doesn't really see himself as anything more than a hard working, family man. The Noyce/Ford movies turned Ryan into James Bond.

I love that fully freeze when Jack is told that He is presently at the meeting. It makes him feel very human and I can identify with that moment.

one of the best tom clancy adaptations I've ever seen and I've read all of his books.

This constitutes the bulk of the Soviet surface fleet.

Love it. Baldwin played the role of an analyst so well in this scene.

The star of this film is a cinematography. I swear, every frame of this film can be captured, framed, and placed on a wall.

No damn Powerpoint with useless text included in the briefing. What a pro.

My favourite scene

- Where are we going anyway?
- Briefing for Jeffrey Pelt, the Presidents National Security Advisor..
- Who is giving him the briefing?
- You are!

I love the part with the General getting slammed by Jack. "You're just an analyst, how could you possibly know what's going on in his head?" BECAUSE HE'S AN ANALYST, DUH!

the most astonishing feature of this film is that : people are actually smart! No BS orders from the high up, no crying and b;tching about what is right or wrong, its just masterful planning and smart people making contribution.

This Jack Ryan will always be the best Jack Ryan. Not the JSOC special operator super spy that he is in current material.

As much as I thought Harrison Ford did an ok Jack Ryan, this Jack Ryan played by Baldwin was the Jack Ryan in my mind's eye while reading the book.

Baldwin was perfect as Ryan. No one else has adapted the character as well

No Power Point in sight, just people living the moment

To be honest, it would be a very horrifying situation if this ever happened and it was true that Ramius had lost his mind and was bent on firing the Red October's missiles at targets in the United States.

Hell just the fact that the entire Soviet Northern and Baltic Fleets, and as well as substantial amounts of the Mediterranean Fleet, all of sudden without warning just began to fire up their engines and sail into the Atlantic towards the US Coast would be scary enough.

"Mr Ryan... your lack of confidence... is... disturbing....(heavy breathing)..." Ryan begins choking as if an invisible hand is around his throat

Fun book fact: They(the Americans) don’t call it “CATERPILLAR” because they don’t know anything about it. It’s really only referred to as a new propulsion system/drive. Only the Soviets call it that.

Just remember, this event occurred in November, 1984 (actually it did not, but you get so engrossed in this souped-up action flick that you find yourself believing). THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER would have gotten an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects had the category had been competitive. As it was, it was TOTAL RECALL that snared a Special Achievement Academy Award for the visual effects supervised by Eric Brevig.
