I’m actually very glad that Tom Cruise fought really hard to bring back Val Kilmer for Top Gun: Maverick since he wouldn’t do another movie ever since he wanted to bring his best friend back for the sequel. Thank you, Tom and Val for bringing on a great performance in the sequel. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

If you pay attention... right after the hug, when Tom Cruise says "Thank you Ice ... for everything, " you can see Val Kilmer getting very emotional, almost as if he didn't expect to hear that "everything" from Tom. Best scene of the film.
