With graphics cards getting harder and harder to find it can really drive up the price of a gaming PC. This build gets to have a lot of its budget put into the gaming PC because we went the work station route using the HP Z4 which allows us to have a ton of budget left for a used RTX 3070!

6700XT would have made a lot more sense than the 3070 because of the additional 4GB of VRAM. That makes a big difference in newer games at 1440p.

Z Workstations lets gooo! I actually have a Z4 G4 motherboard, CPU, and cooler assembly in my closet. I was trying to find a way to do my usual trick of finding a way to make this use a standard ATX PSU in a standard ATX case. Unfortunately, its alot more difficult compared to the Z440, Z420, and Z400s of the past :(. Great video you guys!

Very cool! Nice how the intake fan blows right across the NVMe drive.

Did something similar, got an HP Z230 tower with i7 4770 and 500gb SSD for $75 plus shipping, additional 16gb ram to go with what I already have (32gb total), and re-using my 3TB HDD for storage and games that do fine with it, then got a W6600 Pro 8GB for graphics. About $320 total.

This HP Z4 G4 is extremely good value. You can't build a cheaper PC from new parts with the same specs and versitility. The only downside with the computer is that it uses proprietary motherboard and power supply.

When you are done using this as a gaming system you can get a bunch of cheap ram, maybe upgrade the cpu, add a high speed network card, add some storage and you got a very powerfull home server.

Z4-G4 sounds like a droid straight out of Star Wars.

I actually used this PC in school. It’s cool that anyone can buy it and turn it into a gaming computer.

The case external styling, reminds me of the old Thermaltake h15.I liked that style.

Next time go for the Xeon version, you get a second m.2 slot as well as more cpu options and support for up to 512gb ram.

Cool! I just need an old PC and modify heavily on it as long as the hardware and software are compatible.

For budget gaming builds you can't beat starting with a used workstation. I have built them on an HP z440, Lenovo P510, Lenovo P520 and a Dell T5820. The Lenovo's are the the easiest but you can't use standard ATX power supplies so the P510 is limited to an 8/6 pin video card. The P520 has 2 8 pins. The T5820 has 2 8 pin as well. The z440 only has 2 6 pins but you can get adapter cables to use a standard ATX power supply. The HP's use their own CPU fan headers so using an upgraded CPU cooler can be a problem. The T5820 does too but you can get an adapter. The problem is that the video card will cost you more than then the rest of the system.

I am still rocking a Lenovo Thinkstation P520 from the older budget video xD. Threw a 3070 FE in it and been solid for well over a year now at 1440p for me.

I'd recommend a workstation upgrade up to 3-400 $ max for a gaming PC. Above that just get a cheap Am4 build with a decent GPU and you can go allll the way up to a higher mid tier build with the same pc with a 5800x3d and a stronger gpu.. with a workstation pc you're always hard locked to an ancient socket and barely if any upgrade path.
