I'm Being Critical, I'm Not Being A 'Hater'

Basic message is that we need to stop being so overprotective of things outside ourselves. If you understand the situation go ahead and say something, but if it's about a the concept of America and Kaepernick or a star like Taylor Swift, you should be careful about going on a limb for them. Because we're all fed mostly positive messages by rich and powerful people that want to maintain the status quo. Are you buying to those images when you call me "just a hater." Being a critical fan does make me hate everything about what I'm critiquing...Nothing is immune from fault.

I wholeheartedly agree with pretty much everything you said in this video, Chris! I am an international student from Russia living in the US, and I love my motherland with my entire being, but I will never choose to neglect the things that are wrong with it. Russia is an incredibly beautiful and, at the same time, troubled place and I will always admit that as I think every responsible citizen of any country in this world should. Thank you for making such wonderful, informative videos and being so awesome and courageous!

I always catch myself getting that feeling of being personally insulted when someone hates something I love but that is when I do my best to put things in real proportions and allow others to say what they want while trying to not feel hurt. It is such and interesting topic and I think about it a lot too.

omg YES. one thing that really gets to me is that if I have an unpopular opinion regarding the US or our pledge, policies, etc., im called unpatriotic and told to leave? I don't get why we can't have a discussion or debate about certain topics. How can we improve the US/our way of life here if we aren't critical of it?

ABSOLUTELY, no one is perfect or is going to please every audience, which is a given... every media out there is going to have problems, and we don't have to ignore it in order to enjoy it. i highly encourage people to be critical of the media they take in, my mom says she could never live her life doing that, when i told her i do? i can't understand how she ISNT careful about what she takes in!

I totally agree with your feeling. I just take it that too many people look only on the surface of something and are never curious to dig a little deeper into a subject. It's one thing to have a knee-jerk reaction to something, but that doesn't mean I should instantly start mouthing off about it until I've taken the time to really critically think about it. Kapernick feels that he needs to take a stand and be heard and this is his way of doing that. And I respect him for it.

I agree, as you imply complexity and nuance of opinion probably indicate intelligence = an ability to appreciate finer points, multiple options, interpretations, etc. A diversity of critiques, opinions, range of ideas in general I would say makes something better/stronger/more interesting/more applicable. Probably what I'm trying to say, is that anytime critiques (= difference) is not valued then we get a one-dimensional treatment or monoculture of ideas: when that happens we all lose.

I love the fire emblem video game franchise. I think it's the finest turn based tactical rpg. I also like it's stories. The biggest flaw is how they tell the story. It just throws a wall of text at your face with a picture of the character saying it. It gets really bad in awakening and fates, with having up to 15 minutes of reading

I agree and disagree at the same time but I still respect your opinion.
