The fallout from Fridays’ global IT outage, caused by a faulty security update by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike which caused Microsoft Windows computers to crash around the world, is continuing to affect businesses.

Delta Airlines cancelled more than 600 flights that were due to take off today. The airline appears to have been worse affected than rivals.

CrowdStrike says "a significant number" of devices that were impacted by a global IT outage on Friday are now back online.

This global internet outage is insane! All airlines grounded and i was stock the airport and even banks, media, and offices from the U.S. to Australia. How can CrowdStrike have such a monopoly that could help restore such a massive amount of tech?

Why do you invite cybersecuriy expert to interview and then cut him off when he's explaining the problem? Very rude of you, BBC.

I wonder how many millions of people have unchecked automatic updates since this happened.

Why is this berk conflating outsourcing with third party software?

The central issue here is that a company failed to properly validate data generated by their build processes before release, and their customers don't deploy updates in waves/rings, so they could pick up on these kinds of issue when a vendor fails to.

CrowdStrike should also have coded their driver to validate their behavioural definition files prior to loading them - at very least, checking they're not filled with null values.
This alone would prevent this category of problem.

"a significant number of the 8.5 million..." is wild demon-time phrasing to not say "a majority"

Took longer to get the bitlocker keys than rename the crowdstrike directory.. or just that single file. I can see where not having your bitlocker keys in AD would be the biggest issue.. and that’s regardless of Crowdstrike.

CrowdStrike is a billion dollar company, with a B. They're trusted by critical government, public, and private services and they shafted each and everyone. The lack of outrage from our authorities is absolutely disgusting and infuriating!

Just had to get picked up 5 hours from home in Minneapolis. Glad I didn't wait in line to try to get on another flight. I would still be stuck there. I feel bad for people who live farther away who have no options for new reservations or another way to get home.

This is what happens when you outsource for all your technology needs and rely on a single provider

If Delta sues Crowdstrike, it could be Chapter 11 for Crowdstrike. Imagine one push of a button good enough to destroy everything
