The 10 Most DANGEROUS Cities in Michigan

Holy crap! These are the places in Michigan that are CRAZY dangerous!

When you look at crime numbers, most of the midwest isn’t too bad for crime. It’s about average. Missouri is really bad - and look at that - Michigan is up there, too. Five years ago, Michigan was about average when it came to crime numbers per capita. But at this rate, Michigan is close to cracking the top 10 when it comes to robberies, shootings, car jackings and all that other BS. And within the state of Michigan, there are some bad bad areas. Places where you shouldn’t be out after dark. Cause it’s super scary out there.

Michigan! There were more than 47,000 violent crimes here in this state last year, and more than 700 murders. That sounds scary, but it’s nothing like it was in the 1990s when this place was a mad house. But as you can see, crime had been going down somewhat over the last couple of decades, and Michigan’s violent crime rate was a little bit below average. Not anymore.

You can’t get too comfortable. It’s getting worse here over the last couple of years. There are certain parts of Michigan that you might get jacked at Meijers. Yes, even Meijers isn’t safe anymore and that is a shame. Especially the Meijers’’’ in the places we’re going to talk about. Places like Ypsilanti.

I grew up outside of Detroit. In Florida now since 1991. There are a lot of beautiful places in Michigan.

As a native and lifelong Michigander, I can assure you that this is a very beautiful and scenic place. HOWEVER, you need to avoid our larger cities like your life depends on it, because it does.

I can just imagine how gorgeous those homes and buildings were back in their day. My husband is from Lansing. He’s been stabbed and jumped. My heart broke that he has a childhood memory of seeing a murder and the sound of gun shots aren’t a big deal. I think Michigan is a great example of how bad policies can ruin things very quickly.

Detroit was absolutely gorgeous back in the day. It was safe! People left there front doors open for neighbors, kids played on the front lawn. Detroit was filled with hard working, proud, loving people. The houses were beautiful, the city was clean, the stores were amazing and run by friendly people. Kids could walk to the soda shops or candy stores alone. Now, it’s the pits of Hell. It’s so heartbreaking to see what’s become of the City where my family lived. The city didn’t destroy itself… it sickens me to no end that it has been disgraced. I will not go there anymore, I suggest you don’t either!

Born and raised in Detroit only a few years ago relocated to the suburbs because financially it made sense. Those of us from Detroit would say it you think this city is scary for spend a night in Flint. You won't be able to get back to Detroit fast enough.

I’m so old that I remember when they made cars in Flint and you couldn’t drink the water in Mexico.

The highways in MI are also some of the worst in the country. You might need new shocks after driving through

The rest of Michigan is beautiful, and well worth the visit or move. I do think west of Lansing is way safer. I never knew what Freedom was until I moved to Michigan.

Here's the secret to living well in Michigan: avoid the large cities. Just go ~10 miles out and you'll find a quiet suburb that beats any neighborhood in the country when it comes to being a good place to raise a family.

Seriously, you work in Lansing? Live in Okemos or EL. You work in Detriot? Take your pick: Livonia, Novi, Troy or even Ann Arbor if you're okay with a 40 minute commute. Grand Rapids? Honestly, any direction works and GR by itself is not too bad as long as you don't live right on downtown. I haven't lived in Flint or Saginaw, but I'm sure a similar trend holds.

PS: The more cops and better funded police departments in your MI county, the better. This is generally true across America, but especially true in MI. Who knew that well-paid police officers with access to resources led to safer communities?

Every city you mentioned has been abandoned by a major industry.

Every dangerous city you have ever talked about has an abnormally high population of African Americans. As a black man, I am ashamed.

Its kind of hard to report a noise complaint in rural michigan when there arent any laws being broken. Where I live people shoot guns all day and hound dogs bark all night. Nothing I can do because there is no noise ordinance. Also found needles on the street and next to lake superior. Lots of dead bodies in that lake too. My house in the UP was broken into within a month of moving in.

If Lansing is that high on that list then there aren’t many truly dangerous places in Michigan. Besides the place you drove through there are plenty of nice middle and some upper class neighborhoods. There truly are very few neighborhoods I’d stay out of at night. Downtown is very safe and the suburbs are all very nice.
