It actually did happen a few times in history. But my favorite example is Ethiopia.

They did it by leveraging their position against several powers. Essentially, they got a couple major powers to figut over them while they traded and negotiated with everyone to profit themselves.

The result was that no major power could claim them, and economically, they made out like bandits.
