I have always wondered if its legal to use the killing curse in the harry potter universe if you're not using it on anyone. Like for example fake moody was able to use the 3 curses on a spider without any issues. So maybe its only illegal using it on other witch/wizards. Thats why the worse reaction for using it is to knock it off.

I would have probably would run for my life in a situation like that, or would have immediately used Expelliarmus on their wand and cursed them with Petrificus Totalus and then gone to get the headmaster
