One of my videos went viral last year (it currently has just under half a million views) and a video I posted last week ended up in the national news. I'm by no means an expert, but I thought I'd chip in with what I've learnt.

There's one major factor I attribute to each of those successes: originality.

If you're doing what everyone else is doing, then there's no reason for people to share your video because they can see it elsewhere. Try to find a question that hasn't been answered, so people will click on it to see how it turns out. In a culture full of the easily bored, people just want to watch what they haven't already seen.

I'd always wondered what makes a video viral, because for most of those videos, the production quality isn't as high as many people reading this comment would strive to have theirs. So thinking of it like this made a bit more sense.

Following the best advice, I have been concentrating my efforts this year on just producing consistent interesting content and it just payed off. Apparently my combination of "cute" and "animals" and "a clever camera angle" worked. Cheers!
