As I bought a LC100 from 2007 in my new home country, Panama, little did I know what I exactly bought, to be honest. It is fitted with a 1HD-FTE with 250K km. The more I drive the car and “experiment” with its capabilities, the more I get surprised by what it can do. One year ago, I payed $20K American for it, which, I tought at the time: “ quite expensive for a 15yo car”. Shortly after I bought it, I made my first visit to an official Toyota dealer. I was welcomed with a: “my goodness, it’s just a BABY!”. Today I came across your video, as I am getting deeper and deeper into this … 4x4 rabbit hole. Every time i see a 4Runner of about 15 yo drive by, I think: “man, thats a beautiful car”. But immediately I am aware of what BEAST I am driving. I’m so happy with it, and you just confirmed this even more. Thanks for the info.

I owned a 105 Series Cruiser with 1hz contemplating a turbo but your video inspired me to buy a 1HDFTE instead. I sold the 1hz with 240, 000kms and picked up a 1HDFTE 100 series with 585, 000kms for the same money. Very happy with the FTE it’s mint mostly highway kms so i figure it’s still got life in her.

I’ve had mine for 15 years and I love it! I’ll never sell my cruiser.

I drive a 79 series with the 1HD FTE engine. It has done 494, 000 Kms and still runs perfectly. The most amazing thing about this engine is the fact that the oil stays clean between servicing at 10, 000 km intervals. When I say clean, I mean clean, to the point it is hard to see the oil on the dipstick. But I do have a question that you may be able to answer. Apart from the sticker on the timing belt cover, I have not been able to find a Toyota logo on the engine anywhere and I find that very odd. I have heard unconfirmed stories that the engine was built for Yanmar to their specs by Toyota and that due Toyota having the troubles that you mentioned here, they got permission to use it in their own vehicles.

Great information.
Very interesting about the 1HD bearing problem, similar problems in the UK.
I have spent a lot of time in Malaysia, I have a house near KLIA, I must say your English is very good, no heavy Malaysian accent, did you school in England?
I love straight six engines, I also love diesels and Land Cruisers, so for me these engines are the best. Oh yes, the Toyota factor, that makes them the best.
My favourite is the 1HDFT purely for it's simplicity for me to repair.
Great video, very good information on the greatest Diesels ever built.

I spoke with a mechanical engineer from northern russia. He told about and showed me pictures of his friends 98 land cruiser 100 that had run 2.000.000km. I didn't believe him until he showed me the pictures. Absolutely incredible. That's an average of 230km every day for 24 years.

They usually import japanese cars and have some rare japanese models.

My 2000 1HZ naturally aspirated diesel was financially written off. I loved that car so much even though I needed a packed lunch just to drive up a hill. I replaced her with a 2000 1HDFTE. Now I don’t even get in a bite and I’m there already.

Literally just purchased a 1hdfte 79series ute here in Australia today.
Have owned an 1hz 79series for 8 years. The 1hz non turbo is an amazing engine. Under powered but extremely reliable.. the new fte has amazing power on exactly the same running gear (gearbox and diffs upgraded) but suspension and steering identical.. the difference is unbelievable between the fte and 1hz.

Thankyou for your video. I am now subscribed 😀

IMO its one of the best of Toyota's diesel engines along side the 1HZ it may not have the power of a 1HD-FTE but damn they wont die my 75 has just clicked over 300k and most of that was done on farm land it probably has around 50k of highway driving the rest is all off road same with our 105 its an ex Parks Vic patrol car.

Great video, very informative.
Could you please do a similar video about the 12HT engine? There seems to be nowhere on Youtube (and on the Internet) where I can find a complete review of this masterpiece.

Similar, 1HD-T 12-Valve with 270, 000 kms... Never missed a beat.

I really wish Toyota could have put this engine in the Tundra. Seems like a solid engine with some good torque

Nice. Tip for anyone in the market, the auto is better than the manual. Uses a ford f250 gearbox and is just a beast off and on road. Mines rocking a badboy extreme Gturbo w/ a chip, exhaust, intercooler. Its quicker than my parents 200 series v8 twin turbo diesel, and stronger! LOVE FROM AUSTRALIA

No need for the question mark. It simply is. Much better to drive than the newer v8
