What material were the baseboards? I'm going to be using MDF and am considering using 18 gauge finish nails. Do you think that'll be appropriate?

Why cant I get my corners flush with my baseboard?

You lost all respect when you mitered the corners. Inside corners should be cope cut, not mitered.
