I've always found it useful to put the plug in before you start, then if you drop any small parts they don't disappear down the plughole.

I just took apart my kitchen tap to have a look at the inside to see if the rubber washer was the same size as the pack I just bought and had a nightmare trying to take it off. In the process I actually created a dripping tap situation trying to prize the thing off with a small knife! So now I have a dripping tap to sort out, marvellous!

I walked into a trade shop, I paused the image of the tools, said I didn't know what washer it would be, walked out with all the kit. Changed the washer within about 6 minutes, perfect!

Couldn't find the isolation for cold bathroom tap so I found the whole experience to be much like the log flume ride at Thorpe Park. I swapped in the valve mechanism for the hot water tap (for which I could find the isolation point in the airing cupboard) whilst replacing the washer. Job done. Cheers Matey.

Tap revival kits are pretty helpful, they're basically the top half of the tap (minus the body) and come with different sized ferrals so can be used with older taps that have a different thread.

Thank you so much for this video, you make everything sound so easy! I did manage to change the washer, but the tap moved a little while I was removing the valve and now the washer that sits between the tap and the top of the basin is exposed slightly where it's squished out the side. I'm guessing the only way to fix that is to loosen the tap from underneath and reposition the washer correctly and I don't think I'm up to that!

If it is all seized up and hard to unscrew, wrap a cloth round with white vinegar overnight to loosen!

Slide a box spanner over the spout of the tap to keep it still to remove the valve from the tap dismantle the valve and lubricate with plumbers grease allways reaseat the seating of the tap and renew washer .Use a ring spanner to remove valve from tap.(far easier) and never use grips on spout
