Hmm. Not a lawyer but I have a humbling experience to share. In a very stressful season of my life, I totally forgot to renew my vehicle registration and my plates were expired by over a year.

I was pleasant, kind, and respectful to the trooper who pulled me over. He asked if I knew why he pulled me over (always say, sorry, officer, I don’t know why, don’t self incriminate). And then he informed me of my expired tags. I believe my respectful demeanor really saved my ass, my car totally could’ve been towed.

I feel like if I asked the “am I being detained?” question right off the rip, he would’ve said “yes”.
