Samara is Pure Evil. Rachel viewed the videotape of her therapy sessions through the lens of a parent with a disturbed child of her own. Near the end of the movie, you see the UNBIASED version; Samara looks into the camera and repeats that she wants to hurt people and that she's sorry, but her face is ecstatic at the idea (instead of remorseful, as Rachel thought she was).
