Steppenwolf is the definition of broken. He changed his mind about usurping Uxas' throne when he could have, and helped him keep it because Uxas was family. He then still got banished, sentenced to conquer/destroy for Uxas and later Darkseid 100, 000 worlds before being allowed home to Apokolips. He's halfway done when we see him in ZSJL, having destroyed and conquered over 50, 000 worlds across countless universes, many with different timelines meaning he might have spent thousands of years doing it. His actions are cruel to us, yes, but they are the result of his broken state. Would you not do anything to return home to your family? Look at how valiantly he fought Superman and the entire Justice League, how unbending. That's the extent of how badly he wanted this. His willpower was so great that he actually managed to get it done. He refused to stop fighting for so long that the Unity synchronized and terraformed Earth into Apokolips, even when his bones were being broken and part of his head was lazered off. All because he just wanted to go home.

Their son has a power to revive all dead people nonstop but its parents wants to reverse its power to kill people.
