How do you complete a drive cycle for emissions? Welcome to Mercie J auto care, where compassion and craftsmanship come together. I’m Rick Smith, master certified technician.

Well the truth is you click your heels together three times and you say "there’s no place like home, there’s no place like home" because that’s $1 million question. How do you complete the drive cycle? It's very tough so here’s a couple of factors that will be helpful. Number one is usually you have to do a least a couple of cycles. So do a drive cycle then let the car sit overnight and then do another cycle. After the car has sat overnight before you drive, start the car and let it idle for five minutes before you drive. For some cars, that’s how you reset one of the monitors. The other thing is drive the car for as long of periods at a steady speed and steady throttle position over 50 miles an hour or as long as possible. Do that multiple times. Also, do a few decelerations without touching the brake for as long as possible. That’s the best advice I can give. Every car is different and every scenario can be more and more challenging, but most the time that’s going to get most of the cars set up to go through emissions.

By the way, if you want to know if your car is ready to pass Emissions Testing here in Maricopa County, AZ, stop by Mercie J, no charge. It takes us five minutes to see if you’re ready to go through or not and the testing facility is just around the corner from our auto repair shop.

Thanks for watching and until next time, safe travels and blessings to you.

About to do my 2000 Ford Taurus SVG drive cycle. Most insane drive cycle I've ever done...and I've done multiple times n the last 11 years. 269, 967 miles.

I just fought my way through this to success. One of the biggies I didn't know was 3/4 to 1/4 tank of gas. I don't drive the car that often and had a full tank of gas. Then, I was trying to get the secondary air injection system to reset. I'd read that for VW you need to lock the doors for it to "count" for the computer. Again, we don't normally lock the doors and so that was delaying how long it took. I started this battle (Maryland) in October and have driven the car hundreds and hundreds of miles more than I'd ever drive in a normal year, in order to pass this stupid test. When people in neighboring states don't have emissions testing at all, it seems a pure government BS.

Thank you for the educational video!
Btw taping my heels together with my flip-flops or sneakers never worked up until I tried the shiny red pumps, along with the three driving suggestions.
I have a vehicle that primarily sits most of its life, and bi-yearly when it's due for the bullshit Californian SMOG check, those drive cycle suggestions have always helped me pass.
The continuous driving at a steady speed of 55mph ( without ) cruise control, air / air-conditioning / and or heat for a solid 15 miles, along with the natural coasting breaking cycles.

Do you have to turn the car off or can you just drive it for 100+ miles then try it again?
