Dr. Strange was waiting for the perfect moment. He wasn't necessarily waiting for Ant-Man to enter the quantum realm since Ant-Man entered it a few seconds before Thanos snapped. There was still 10-20 minutes left until Thanos won. If he had given the stone up right then and there, there is a high chance that the enemy force would've have been there at Wakanda, meaning that he would be fighting with his forces at the beginning of the battle rather than the end. So, as you said, they would've beaten the heroes too early.
