This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the
TED Conferences. It was filmed and edited by Tijo Media at the Carpenter
Theatre at Richmond CenterStage in Richmond, VA.

Tim Hickey is a writer as well as a founder and principal of Tangier Island Oyster Co., an aquaculture partnership with the watermen of Tangier Island, a remote spit of land in the Chesapeake Bay. The island’s isolation has shaped its 700 residents’ culture and value system and helped forge a determination to continue their uncommon lifestyle. Through an investigation of his own drive for working on the Island, Tim aims to reveal what it is about Tangier that appeals to those living on the mainland. A Richmond native, Tim currently lives in Washington, D.C., with his wife and three children.

Awesome video, Tim Hickey! I was born and raised on Tangier and still call TI home. Just when I felt that I was losing hope in our continued existence and Tangier's plight for shoreline protection, you have helped to renew that strength and fight within me with your inspirational speech. I'd really like to get you on board with the crew being assembled to work on the tough project that will be securing our shoreline protection to ensure Tangier's continued existence for the generations to come. You can contact me by calling the Tangier Town office and leaving a message for me. Thanks again for your sharing your wonderful story!

This is great. I am originally from the Eastern Shore of Virginia and have recently moved to Richmond, VA. My ancestors came from Tangier Island. I plan to visit one day, hopefully soon. This video reminds me of my childhood and how I grew up. More people should be aware of this place - it's a great place to call home.

I can totally relate to Tim's message. I have been to Tangier Island via private plane. I was such a wonderful and peaceful experience. I hope that if you can you will also visit this unique, gentle and interesting place.

Hey let us not forget Smith Island which is not far from Tangier. I married a Tangier boy! I love Tangier.

Can someone step up and bring back the Chincoteague Oyster? I grew up on Chincoteague and trust me it is almost a 180 to what Tangier had! But just like the most places on Virginia's Eastern Shore... kids aren't looking back. I sure am now at 34, missing the small town life, friendliness, and if the jobs were just there with my family, I would move back! Thanks for the VIDEO!
