Nearly 22 months after Russia invaded, Ukraine’s much heralded counter offensive has failed to deliver the breakthrough Kyiv expected. Claiming that Russian forces are improving their positions, Vladimir Putin is dispatching more soldiers, weapons and munitions to the battlefield. Ukrainian forces – and citizens – are bracing for another tough winter. With US support hanging in the balance, President Zelensky warns Ukraine could lose without US help.

Meanwhile Russia has launched a diplomatic offensive in the global South and a hybrid attack on the West.

Our question today: Russia’s war on Ukraine: Will Putin get what he wants?

Wilfried Jilge, is an associate fellow at the German Council on Foreign Relations DGAP. An expert on Eastern Europe, he is a mediation adviser on Ukraine at the Center for International Peace Operations (ZIF).

Moritz Gathmann reports from eastern Europe and currently Ukraine for the German news magazine Stern.

Is interesting how we always hear about Russia low morale and massive Russian losses but we never hear about how the Ukrainian army is actually doing

I am amazed at how clueless everybody in the west is about Russia (either clueless or lying to their teeth)

They are trying their best to downplay it but they pretty much can aggree that russia is too stable and is in a better position at the moment than expected and the situation for the ukrainians is tilting towards grim

A game of attrition. And Russia is notorious for that game.

It's ludicrous to think in a war of attrition that Ukraine could win. In addition, the US has a long history of starting wars in other countries, being defeated, then fleeing and abandoning its allies.

The U.S. and Ukraine lost the war since the first day...The U.S. is not in any position to win a war against Russia.

There is a better chance for Jesus 2 come back than there is for Ukraine to beat Russia.

The average age of conscripts in the ukrainian army is now 43, there are even soldiers in tanks in their 70's. Does'nt this indicate very heavy losses among their army

I’m an American, and can’t understand why the U.S. is spending so much on Ukraine 😮. Not let’s not forget all the emigration issues going on also.

To be honest I'm shocked Russia sustained this war for so long even with all the economic restrictions imposed by the powerful countries in the West and the weapons & assistance given by NATO to Ukraine. Russia is THAT strong ... I think Putin really planned this war very well. He's in for the long haul
