How Ukraine Prevented Russia a DAY 1 Win

In February 2022, Vladimir Putin green-lit an invasion on Ukrainian soil, but the Ukraine military is better prepared than Putin realized. The greater battle for Kyiv has now begun and will rage for the next month, but by the end of it, Ukraine will emerge victorious. The war will be decided in the east in the coming months, maybe years, but not within days as Russia foolishly believed it could be.

I was in Kyiv on Day 1 of the war (February 24th) and it was one of the most surreal days of my life. I walked out of Ukraine and into Poland three days later, thanks to help from my Ukrainian friends, some friendly truck drivers who picked me up while hitchhiking from Sokoliv to Rivne and then Rivne to Lviv. The Polish border guards were very generous in allowing me in the country without waiting.

You join the military and train for years, you can do 100 push ups, 30 chin ups, run 10 kilometers in 35 minutes, can shoot a gopher at 1000 meters. Go to war, your helicopter shot down, lands in river. The End.

The Ukrainians showed how important it is not to panic in situations like this. By keeping calm when the Russians first attacked, they prevented the one major opportunity Russia had at a quick victory.

I am Ukrainian and this is a pretty accurate visualization except for 1 thing. Even before UA Special Forces(ССО), ALFA Police Squad(АЛЬФА is kind of like Ukrainian SWAT) was also one of the first attacking the Hostomel Airport and they were the ones who actually managed to delay the Russians supplying the planes. Massive losses on their side, but they did the job and managed to hold the fascists out for as long as needed. True heroes.

Had the blitz been successful, the war would have gone in a completely different direction. The first weeks of the war are particularly interesting from a tactical and strategic standpoint because the Ukrainians managed to hold their ground before any western aid arrived, and they did the best with what they had. Militias and armed civilians engaged in fighting retreats to buy time for the regular army to prepare, air defenses were hidden and moved to avoid detection, air force planes were moved around and survived the initial attacks, communications were kept up and running. I believe this will be object of study in the years to come.

I have to be honest, at that time I thought Russia will occupy Ukraine in less than a week, I am so glad I was wrong!!! Slava Ukraini!

I didn’t believe Ukraine would fall at all. Not many believed me. I had been watching the patriotism and spirit for a year. It’s not like they didn’t have an army that hadn’t been preparing. UK and Americans had been sending massive amounts of weapons for a few months. It wouldn’t last long, but I knew that if they could survive a month without collapsing, they had a good chance. If the west saw how the people were fighting and not surrendering, they would send massive help. They just needed to see that the government and people were willing to pay the price that freedom required. Once I watched the 2014 revolution on Netflix, I could see that something was different in Ukraine. We were not made aware of it in the west. I could see the youth were now invested in a new western future. They had tasted victory. Ukrainian history was thought in schools since then. They were never going back. So proud of them.

There's no such thing as Zelenskyy's REGIME. We elected him ffs and we're gonna elect him out when we want.

I have read a more detailed timeline of these events. The defense of Kyiv was a true national resistance no one expected. Every decision, every fight, and every soldier or civil militia volunteer decided the destiny of Ukraine. Also, the fact that the Ukrainian president refused to leave Kyiv was a big morale boost for the defenders. I admire the bravery of the Ukrainians and their will to stand against the occupation.
