Anne Applebaum is a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and political analyst who writes for the Atlantic. She has written extensively about central and eastern Europe. DW's Teri Schulz asked her for her asessment of what the geopolitical consequences of Russia's War in Ukraine are, and how she thinks it will end.

The offsensive and agressive nature of NATO first came up in the Balkan war, where NATO bombed countries that did not attack it. Russia had collapsed and NATO (US) felt confident to invade/bomb as it pleased. What's changed is that Russia is no longer as weak as it was right after the USSR collapsed. NATO had expanded year after year. When Russia asked to join NATO, the US/NATO said no. But the US/NATO saw an opportuinty to crush Russia using Ukraine as the pawn to be sacrificed. The sanctions against Russia are totally unprecedented including theft of $300B in Russian funds. But Europe is being hurt more than Russia. And Europe is starting to deindustralize as cheap energy from Russia that gave Europe wealth and prosperity is now gone, possibly for ever. Germany and France is trying to find a negotiated peace so that normal trade with Cheap Russian energy can resume. But the US would never let that happen. The war has to go on for a long time, during which Russia is economically destroyed and Europe suppressed. Europe will not have the economic heft to go on a war economy to supply Ukraine's needs.

Ann attended a conference I was at in Poland held by the Kresy organization. She is an excellent speaker and a thoroughly researched historian. I was spurred on to buy and read her book 'A History of the Soviet Camps'. My mother was taken to one of these camps from eastern Poland so I was told first hand what it was like. My father was a Russian prisoner of war in Starobielsk. The Poles and eastern european countries have long memories of their wars with the Russians and occupations - none of it pleasant. Moral is - never ever trust the Russians.
