Our EASY HOMEMADE FRUIT FLY TRAP works like a charm!

And now for something completely different… we just have to share this winning idea for a homemade fruit fly trap. Although you might be wondering what’s up with this post amidst our other content, but read on and you’ll see how it all makes sense.

We’re used to being bugged by bugs up here in cottage country, and the arrival of fruit flies toward the end of summer is especially bothersome. Seems like every time I go to grab a fresh peach to make our CLASSIC PEACH PIE I notice a few flitting about. Another time, I’m taking onions to make our TOMATO ONION SALAD salad and boom, more fruit flies!

Thankfully, I’ve learned how to make this EASY HOMEMADE FRUIT FLY TRAP years ago and it really works! It’s a winning idea so don’t forget to SHARE it with friends.

Here’s how to make it:

PICTURE IT

Hilarious that I’m posting our usual ingredient photo for this, right? Yet, how can I not stick to the plan? In this case, looking at the three things you need to make it, hopefully this is the only time when your mouth is NOT watering!

In the VIDEO attached to this story, you’ll see me using a favourite dish soap. Happy to note that we tested the fruit fly trap using three different dish soaps and each one worked. Use your favourite and expect the same great result.

ASSEMBLE

Combining two tablespoons of dish soap, four tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and six tablespoons of water involves nothing more than a quick stir. After that, we’re adding a piece of plastic wrap and securing it with a rubber band. Last step is to poke the wrap a few times with a toothpick. I kinda move the toothpick around a little bit just to make sure the holes are big enough for the fly to crawl through.

Seems that the fruit flies are attracted to the fragrance of the apple cider vinegar, then get caught up in the soapy water which does ‘em in.

PLACEMENT

We suggest placing the trap in a spot where you notice fruit fly activity. If you notice them around a fruit bowl, place it there. If they seem to like the sink area in the kitchen, try it there.

In the end, you should notice them disappearing within about twelve hours. You can empty the contents of the trap down the sink to dispose of them, then give your glass a rinse and make a new one as required. Nice thing about this trick is that it’s easy, safe and, as mentioned, it works!

Use our EASY HOMEMADE FRUIT FLY TRAP and say goodbye to these unwanted seasonal pesky pests!

I have tested out several fruit fly traps and this one by far worked the best. It is also incredibly cheap. Now I only used a few drops of soap. I left it out, checked back in two hours and there were about 50 fruit flies at the bottom.

I bought two fruit fly tramps and I just now set them up. When I open the bottle of the liquid attractant I could really smell vinegar. First thing I thought of was that this cannot be difficult to make at home. as vinegar is a main ingredient. So, on to YouTube I went. Yours is the first video I came to and it gave me all the information I need. Instead of ordering expensive refill attractant I'm going to follow your delicious recipe! Thank you so much! :-)

Great video, I use one of my plastic water bottles after I drink it. I cut the top off& put in half apple-cider vinegar & water, a couple drops of dawn& flip the top over like a funnel& it's done.

This might be the best video on the internet. On my second watch.

I use a MUCH smaller amount of dish soap. Not more than a teaspoon, less vinegar & less water. Then I make SEVERAL traps instead of one!

Thank you for the inspiration. I've caught all my fruit flies! But I didn't have apple cider vinegar but I had white wine vinegar. It worked excellent! I put that in a plastic 5-in diameter shallow container so that there was about half a cm in the bottom and a couple drops of dish soap and I've caught all my fruit flies. I've had to refresh it about every two days. Especially If I caught a lot of them. And have moved it to different areas of my home to catch the ones in different rooms.

This works amazing but i leave the plastic off, why restrict entry to the trap? Unless you dont wanna spill it or something

can I use vinegar instead of apple cider vinegar to make the mix?

That is great for wine fly, however l would like to know how to trap tropical fruit flies that sting and ruin fruit while it is chill not quite ripe. Totally different insect.

I wonder what the role of the detergent in this mix is?

Just wanted to say thank you for this!!! These traps killed a ton of them. I also used a version without the wrap on top (full up to lid, a little less soap) and it worked as well.
