Our EASY HOMEMADE FRUIT FLY TRAP works like a charm!
And now for something completely different… we just have to share this winning idea for a homemade fruit fly trap. Although you might be wondering what’s up with this post amidst our other content, but read on and you’ll see how it all makes sense.
We’re used to being bugged by bugs up here in cottage country, and the arrival of fruit flies toward the end of summer is especially bothersome. Seems like every time I go to grab a fresh peach to make our CLASSIC PEACH PIE I notice a few flitting about. Another time, I’m taking onions to make our TOMATO ONION SALAD salad and boom, more fruit flies!
Thankfully, I’ve learned how to make this EASY HOMEMADE FRUIT FLY TRAP years ago and it really works! It’s a winning idea so don’t forget to SHARE it with friends.
Here’s how to make it:
PICTURE IT
Hilarious that I’m posting our usual ingredient photo for this, right? Yet, how can I not stick to the plan? In this case, looking at the three things you need to make it, hopefully this is the only time when your mouth is NOT watering!
In the VIDEO attached to this story, you’ll see me using a favourite dish soap. Happy to note that we tested the fruit fly trap using three different dish soaps and each one worked. Use your favourite and expect the same great result.
ASSEMBLE
Combining two tablespoons of dish soap, four tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and six tablespoons of water involves nothing more than a quick stir. After that, we’re adding a piece of plastic wrap and securing it with a rubber band. Last step is to poke the wrap a few times with a toothpick. I kinda move the toothpick around a little bit just to make sure the holes are big enough for the fly to crawl through.
Seems that the fruit flies are attracted to the fragrance of the apple cider vinegar, then get caught up in the soapy water which does ‘em in.
PLACEMENT
We suggest placing the trap in a spot where you notice fruit fly activity. If you notice them around a fruit bowl, place it there. If they seem to like the sink area in the kitchen, try it there.
In the end, you should notice them disappearing within about twelve hours. You can empty the contents of the trap down the sink to dispose of them, then give your glass a rinse and make a new one as required. Nice thing about this trick is that it’s easy, safe and, as mentioned, it works!
Use our EASY HOMEMADE FRUIT FLY TRAP and say goodbye to these unwanted seasonal pesky pests!
