You Don't Need A 5G Phone (Yet)

[MRMOBILE'S 5G SPEED TEST IN PROVIDENCE, RI]

Exactly ten years ago, I bought my first 4G smartphone –the HTC Evo 4G– and while the phone was amazing, the Sprint WiMAX network I tested it on ... wasn't. It was too new, too thin, and deployed at a higher frequency that couldn't penetrate buildings very well – so it was barely useable indoors.

You might remember a few months back I tested Verizon's 5G network in Chicago and found many of the same issues. All 5G networks are new, and the millimeter-wave bands Verizon is using for its rollout are many times higher frequency than even those WiMAX bands that gave me such trouble back in ‘09. That means they penetrate buildings even more poorly, even if they do provide incredible data speeds.

So what I wanted to find out was, how much difference does a few months and a much smaller city make to making 5G work in real life?

To find out, I took a train to Providence, RI to test Verizon's new 5G network there ... and just to push the limits a little bit, I'm doing the testing and the filming and the editing entirely on a Samsung Galaxy Note 10+. Join me for MrMobile's latest 5G speed test!

[ABOUT MRMOBILE'S 5G SPEED TEST IN PROVIDENCE]

MrMobile's 5G Speed Test In Providence RI was produced following four hours with a Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ 5G review sample at a Verizon press event in Providence, RI in August 2019. The devices were tested live on Verizon's 5G network deployed in Providence, with only one other group of testers (network engineers and their guests) using the network at the time of testing. MrMobile does not produce paid or sponsored reviews; neither Samsung nor Verizon was offered copy review or approval prior to publication, and no compensation was requested or provided in exchange for this coverage.

This video was shot, voiceovered and edited entirely on a Galaxy Note 10+ review sample provided by Samsung for MrMobile's Galaxy Note 10+ Review (published in August). Editing software: Adobe Rush. Ask questions about the edit process at the social links below!

In case you missed the description or the special callouts in the voiceover: this video was shot and edited ENTIRELY on the Galaxy Note 10+ using Adobe Rush! So if you're asking about 16:9 or the reduced resolution or audio quality – there's your answer! :) Otherwise, what do you think? It's been a fun adventure to build this one and I'd love your feedback!

Shockingly well done for Adobe Rush on a phone!

Well this is depressing.. Mr Mobile can make better videos using just a phone then I could make in a month using a computer.

Actually the editing is so good for mobile device

Really amazing that you shot and edited this video on a Note 10+ - REALLY Great stuff, Michael!

The quality hit is almost unnoticeable. The only thing I noticed for a second was that the aspect ratio was back to 16:9. But everything from the voice over to b-roll was pretty good. An overexposed shot here and there, but that hardly took away anything from the overall end product.

I love how Verizon keeps trying to get tech reviewers to try out the new 5G network again and again only to show that it is still flawed. Fast speeds are great, but if it has the coverage of a home wifi, then I would rather stay on 4G. A reliable connection is vastly better than a fast one that drops if I turn around.

I absolutely enjoyed the filming and editing on the Note 10+. Enough entertainment for me. Great video.

That's what I've been saying! The infastructure needed doesn't even cover one entire city yet.

Hey, my wife and I met you on the street at Thayer. As I said, here I am subscribed to your channel and digging your vids. Great work!

The fact you need a '5G staging area' says a lot.

Video edited on the note looks fine, no real difference except for the missing animations that I am sure must be a way to add ...

I'm actually really impressed that you were able to shoot, edit, and voice-over this video completely on your phone. The sound quality is really good, considering. I think 5G needs to come down in frequency a fair bit to overcome the blockage from walls, windows, etc.

Michael, I love that you spent time and energy to produce from a note 10+, but I miss the audio from your normally edited videos.

Still amazing! You editing on the Note 10+ is still better than 99% of YouTubers. Wow, you have some killer skills!! I definitely dig it!!

Your editing skills on a phone are Amazing. Couldn't have known it was on a phone unless you said it.

I get around 20-25 megabits on 4G. I don't see what's the problem with that. Providers better be providing way better data plans if we want to take advantage of 5G speed.

Yeah you could tell right away that you weren't using your usual camera gear, but especially the editing I was surprised by how good you managed to get it on a phone
