How to Drive an Automatic Scooter for the First Time

Guys! Get some sense of humor please! This is not a manual on how to ride a scooter! This video is a joke, my husband took it and I uploaded it here just for fun. But surprisingly it received a lot of views. I don't promote riding a bike without wearing some special protective clothes and proper shoes or without a license! I don't know how to ride a scooter myself, as you can see from that video! It was my first time hopping on a scooter. I made a few laps and recorded this video. That's it!

The video was taken in February 2013 in Chiang Mai, Thailand

Hi Alyona, I really enjoyed your vid. I have been riding a scooter for 9 years.  It took me courage to drive it for the first time too.  In my opinion you did very well with your first ride.  Your English is very good.  I hope you had plenty of practice, and are enjoying your scooter.  It is a lot of fun.  Don’t let anybody tell you to push past your comfort level.
You are a very sweat lady. and I really like your vid!

Thank you Cristian for your answer to sdeary1. I was just going to write the same. I am not an expert but when you drive an automatic scooter you are supposed to use more the back brake as I said in my video.

Also, you will not likely end-over from using just the front brakes. Bicycles have a high center of gravity and can easily lock up the front wheel. On any motor bike (including scooters) not only does the engine provide some braking on the rear wheel (when you decrease the throttle), but the weight of the engine results a very low center of gravity thus making it more stable in braking. Many dirt bikes and super-sport bikes can end-over, but this is not really the case with a scooter.

Just remember, coming off even at 30mph with just a Tee Shirt and leggings on will take probably months of skin grafts to get you arms and legs looking vaguely like arms or legs again!
Protection! Biggest beginner tip!

Congratulations for your "test ride" - scooters and motorcycles are great vehicles to ride, welcome to the family!
Just one little recommendation, if I may? I would suggest to wear "laced-up shoe-wear" for foot/ankle protection and you would be less likely to "drop one" if you skid your foot on the pavement at a stoplight or other maneuver.
Enjoy and have a safe ride, Ciao, L (from Maine/USA and Quebec/CAN)

only use the back brake under 30mph to slow down, over 30 u should use the front a lot more

suggestion... before actually buying the scooter or alike... buy the protective gear to wear when driving... if not you most likely will commit the mistake of driving with poor skills and no gear to protect you

Get a new helmet, a full face helmet some boots (girls love to buy boots lol ) and gloves and a jacket as a minimum, you should dress for the accident you hope you'll never have, even coming off at 30 mph can cause terrible road rash and if you land on your face you can say goodbye to your nose, front brake for braking rear for slow speed control.
In my experience scooters tend to have a bit of lag on the throttle so at a junction i would apply the rear brake and lift the revs a little then to pull out just release brake and rev up seems to stop that lag and gets you off the mark quicker. Just my opinion and you can disregard it if you like or give it a try.

Actually you're supossed to use the back brake more than the front brake, as you sayd the front brake is for emergency and it brakes better because the weight of the bike gets on the front wheel when you use the front brake. The rear brake is not that effective because there isn't much weight on the back of the bike.

Good grief!! It took her a long time to start riding. A scooter is not hard to figure out....but she did it so I'll give her credit for that.

To clear up the braking issue. On any vehicle, when you're slowing down, momentum transfers the weight forward and thus the front brakes have 70%+ of the total stopping power; as such the rear brake should be used as a control brake or with the front to do a quick stop. I've ridden both scooters and motorcycles and the main reason I use the rear brake is when starting on a hill (as I have to release the front brake to twist the throttle).
