Hill Starts In An Automatic Car | Learn to drive: Basic skills

You may have heard that hill starts can be tricky. They can be in a manual car, as it requires good coordination and a lot of practice. However, hill starts are far easier in an automatic car - as it’s almost impossible to stall the engine or roll backwards. In this video we will show how to do a hill start in an automatic car, so you can feel confident next time you’re pulling away uphill at a busy junction. This is an excellent, informative video. Years ago, I had an old car that, in spite of having an automatic transmission, would roll backward if stopped on an uphill grade, and required a simultaneous use of the brake and accelerator for an instant. Once when I was invited to a colleague's home, I had to explain why I had to park in the street, because the car couldn't negotiate the steep grade of the driveway!

Thanks so much. Only had my car one week and very stressed over hill starts as my drive on a slope. I will need to keep brake on when reversing, either with foot or electric hand brake. Thanks so much for explaining that it’s ok to do this.

been teaching manual since 2010 and now bought my first Auto car to teach in. i love how smooth my new car is for me and pupils plus no stalling and jolting and i massive win NO CLUTCH!!!. I have noticed my pupils getting after 2 hour lessons mpg of 100+ and avarage of 97.2mpg. i wont go full ev yet tho as i live in a flat and the range is to low for confort plus should not have to puplic charge at higher rate when other can charge at home for much cheaper. look forward to owning a full ev in future tho.
