He’s a time lord!

I am Melchizedek the time Lord!
without father
without mother
having neither beginning of days
nor end of nights

From the 1986 rock musical called Time.

Wasn’t expecting that! King of Sodom is quite the plot twist. Thank you for sharing that Dan.

Being June, what better to give fundamentalist protesters at Pride this year, than the gift of knowledge that originally the King of Sodom became a Priestly type for the role of Jesus in Christian theology.

Great explanation. Melchizedek certainly became a mysterious figure. I think he was also highly mythologized in the Enoch literature if my memory serves.

I watched this simply to learn how to pronounce Melchizedek.

He is more special than Jesus and by the definion of apologists now God too:

*Hebrew 7 3 "He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever"*

I grew up in an evangelical Baptist church, and was taught that Melchizedek was a pre-New Testament appearance of Jesus. This was just one example of their attempting to rationalize trinitarian doctrine. I was also taught that every mention of The Angel of the Lord in the Old Testament were also appearances of Jesus.

Actually, the argument for Melchizedek’s pre-eminence in Heb. 7 would fall apart if Abram tithed to one Melchizedek and another King of Sodom. But the flow of the Gen. 14 narrative and especially the dialogue in v19-24 don’t allow for two different kings any more than dialogues with different names for God mean that there are multiple characters (when it’s actually multiple titles referring to the same “person”). The Heb. 7 argument, and Gen. 14 itself, only makes sense if Melchizedek is the King of Sodom.

Is there any prove or backup for the idea that Jesus actually was Melchizedek? And can we read the scriptures as to say that only Jesus ever became a high priest after the order of Melchezidek, or can we say there were more holding that office?

1:03 I also highly recommend Robert Cargill's book. It's currently the most expensive book in my growing library but it was good if you're curious about Malki-Zedek. Now that bit about 11Q13 is interesting and I don't remember if Cargill brought that up or not. That definitely sounds like it influenced the author of Hebrews!

I've been waiting for this subject to come up. And as usual I still know as much about Milky Dizzyk as I did before, which is basically nothing. But that's like everyone else apparently.

I didn't know who he "really" was, but that name is epic.

According to the Qumran fragment quoted by Dan, Melchizedek is the one who is going to judge the saints at the end time and redeem people.
So in fact, every Judean group had their Messiah :
- Cyrus The Great
- Judas of Galilee
- The Master of Justice
- Melchizedek
- Jesus The Nazarene
- Simon Bar Kokhba

Well, that’s a lot of people for one function 👀
Who else we got ?

Very nice. imo these are "concepts" and in my mind I best like the term "archetypes" introduced by Carl Jung. For instance Elohim is often attributed to elevated beings...or even elevated above mortal beings, even sometimes evil. Context is key in this term "Elohim", "elohim", and I feel the same applies now to this term "Melchizedek". Albeit I buy into "inspired cultural history ie mythos" as a way the divine communicates to humans therefore the "storyline" still has merit but....also needs to be included with the higher concept of "archetypal". Priest King being a very useful concept in personal spirituality and in reading the texts. the term Melchizedek...brings a lot of clarity. ty sir for you hard work. Love the fact that you also referenced another academic take. Now ..all this being so I still feel like prophets and/or Priest Kings are able to work within and write sacred texts utilizing even flawed understandings to achieve spiritual aims. This is in line with the concept that "the divine" uses the available knowledge and learning of the humans being dealt with to rise to their highest spirituality, so in no way does the lack of academic reality take away from sacred learnings where these terms are used, always remembering that it is the divine within, that is the final arbitrator of spiritual truth above texts, which allows the appropriate judgement of out of context principals that if acted upon, can be the exact opposite of the divine good. Peace.

Hi Dan. I'm not being a troll. I'm a struggling deconverted calvinist. I know you don't like to talk about your beliefs. I know on your live stream yesterday you shared you were Mormon. I know you share that you view the bible as man made and you are one of the most knowledgeable academics I've seen. I want to know how you still have faith, how you view the bible. It would really help me.

Bob Cargill's book is great! Absolutely love it. I would think that the 10th given was sort of a reward to Abraham that Abraham denied

Mythvision did a video called “Who is Melchizedek “ that poses Melchi-zedek in psalms 110 translates as “king of righteousness “ and “order of” as “given as” or something, meaning “order of Melchizedek “ should be “given as a king of righteousness “. And the Genesis reference was added later from a mistranslation of Melchizedek as a name in Psalms 110 to smooth out the story. This was posed by a scholar named Grenard(?). I can't find Melchizedek references by the guy, though.
