When I don't do face pulls, my shoulder eventually hurts from all the pressing. If I do them, then I don't get any shoulder pain. That's good enough for me

Of course the face pull is not a great muscle building exercise, but it's a staple in my warm ups because of external rotation. Athlean x got it right on those.

If targeting rear delts, I agree that face pulls aren't the best for these reasons, but I think it's a good compound exercise for external rotation. Practicing external rotation with more than pure external rotation

The point of “injury prevention”(risk mitigation) movements isn’t hypertrophy. The face pull is good because of the positioning you’re in at the hardest part- the shortened position- which is a similar position to what they’ll be in when doing pressing movements (the main movement pattern it’s used to “prevent” injuries from) and where they need the actual nervous system recruitment abilities to be higher AS WELL AS the connective tissue remodeling.

Face pulls are excellent for this. Not everything is about hypertrophy. Most things aren’t for most people.

The face pulls the way athlean x says to do it isn’t for rear delts hypertrophy and he already stated that. it’s for shoulder health external rotation and just feels good for the shoulders if done correctly

I'm going to continue doing them because I do them specifically to train the external rotators, which you conclude by saying they do.

Face pull provides a short range contraction for the upper back musculature/rear delts. It’s a “corrective” to all the “forward” motions we overuse.

Not really about aesthetic muscle hypertrophy.

Having said that “there are better exercises” is true, if we wanted less exercises, but not the full story. We can isolate rear delts, we can isolate external rotation, we can isolate the “trap 3” with trap 3 raises; and we measurably progress all these (as we can measurably progress facepulls.)

But, modern aesthetic muscle hypertrophy is downplaying the value of short range contraction.

Nah man i will keep my facepulls. Just because lengthened position promotes a bit more muscle than shortened position doesnt mean i will just leave anything that emphasizes peak tension at shortened position. I gonna trust my years of training based on which facepull has been very beneficial for me.

Tbh I love face pulls, they hit me best, a good way to train those external rotation with bit of rear delts, along with some traps. Certainly not the only exercise you should be doing, but a great one none the less. It's that squeeze at the end which is important. Also it makes a dramatice difference with change in height of the pull, the length of the rope, and where you are pulling to

Face pulls aren't meant for hypertrophy, they are for shoulder health and injury prevention you nut. I do them before ohp and hadn't had a problem since.
