Synology NAS WiFi Setup

Ever wanted to put a NAS drive in a location where there are no network points, or even a network at all? You can if you make your synology DS216J NAS a wireless device. It's easy, just plug in any of the supported usb wifi dongles and you 're done.

Hi John. Nice video. I just tried the same with a TP Link adapter. A little larger but it does the job. However, once I had unplugged my ethernet cable, I had to connect to the NAS with a local IP address and could only connect to it that way.
Previously I had a sub-domain mapped to a NOIP hostname. Have rebooted a few times and refreshed the IPs etc. Still no access over https and my custom domain.

Very good but What’s a Synology is it a toaster 🤔
Does it do thick crust or wholemeal too 👍😀🐾🍟🍺

You could make the ip static before unplugging the ethernet to avoid changing the ip address.

Briliant video, John, thanks for this. I had no ideal Synology could do this. One suggestion, however. I think you're using the wrong lens for this video. The focus depth is too shallow so the camera keeps adjusting focus throughout the video which is distracting and a bit nauseating. Either push the camera away from subject and fix the focus, or use a different lens that keeps the entire depth of your subject (you, computer, Synology, Netgear box) in focus or something, anything, to avoid this situation in future. Cheers.

Wow thank you John!! Super helpful, I have a question:
I have that exact model on my desk but the WIFI is too far away so I have currently connect the NAS via ethernet to my Mac. However I can not get my WifI and NAS to work together I keep needing to switch between them in order to either have internet or access to my files. Would this method you mentioned in your video be able to solve this issue? Thank you again great video

Great content. If my NAS is connected to my IP’s router which is wireless would I still need a wireless dongle to access it wirelessly from a laptop or smartphone etc?

Wifi adapters do not work anymore. "Synology NAS with DSM version 6.2 (which starts from 02.2020) or above versions no longer supports USB Wi-Fi Adapter." that's from synology themselves
Solution for those who doesn't have wired access to router: Get a wifi range extender with a LAN port. Sync it with router through a WPS button. Plug it in a power point in your room close to Synology station and run a LAN cable from wifi range extender to Synology NAS.
Voila!
