How to Access a Synology NAS Remotely with DDNS (Tutorial)

preview_player
Показать описание
This tutorial will show how you can setup and configure DDNS on a Synology NAS to access it remotely. After DDNS has been setup, you will be able to utilize a VPN server, port forwarding, or a reverse proxy (with a domain name) to access your NAS from anywhere in the world! There are links below that will show you how to set up a VPN server (OpenVPN on a Synology NAS), and the "How to Secure a Synology NAS" video shows all three options and the security around them.

Excellent, to the point, knowledgeable, clear voice, no background music!

Thank you. Instead of blanking out the form filling, it would be far better to use burner addresses so that people can see the exact criteria required. This would be far clearer to someone watching this (and other) instructionals.

Some of us are total newbies.

Very helpful detailed video, and on point. I thought this would be a headache of a setup, but this walked me through it with zero issues. Thank you!

Thanks for the informative videos. I just bought a Ds920+ and will be referring to a number of your tutorials.

I followed every click, but the domain I set up is not reachable with my browser.

Thak you for the great tutorial! I get that there are two main ways that you can access your synology NAS remotely. The first being a VPN server. But I failed to spot the second method since after using VPN there is the conclusion. So, a little bit of help on that second way. Thanks!

Does setting up the VPN server have to be through OpenVPN? I already have a Private Internet Access account so was curious if I could use that instead? Thanks in advance

Great video, thanks. I have an issue, ddns is not updating when my external IP changes. I'm a bit lost as to why. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks for the video much appreciated. My DDNS is set up correctly according to this video with the status stating 'Normal'. I'm trying to access my Synology via ssh through terminal and I keep getting a connection timed out error message for port 22.

I've set up port forward rules for the external IP to my synology via my router which the synology is connected to but nothing seems to get me past that error message. Turning off firewall on both router and synology hasn't fixed it either. I even flushed the DNS cache on my mac. Still nothing.

Not sure what else there is to try but open to suggestions.

I have a problem when set up DDNS, for some reason "checkbox Get a certificate from Let's Encrypt and set it as default" is gray out for me. Any ideas why? Thanks!

You said that if I check the box to obtain a TLS certificate from Let's Encrypt at the time I set up DDNS, then I won't have to open TCP port 80 or 443 for certificate renewal. You said that renewal would occur using DNS. Could you explain that a little more? Without opening UDP/TCP port 53, Let's encrypt won't be able to reach my NAS for DNS communication. If you are saying that Let's Encrypt will renew through the Synology DDNS service, how does the renewed certificate get to my NAS? Thanks for a great video, like all your videos.

Thank you for this video, it was well explained. However, I have a question: at the end of the video, you seemed to jump quite quickly into all these fairly technical methods of accessing the NAS, including via VPNs etc. Is all of this necessary? The official instructions simply say to access the NAS over the internet by typing the hostname into the browser, and when I attempt to this I get either continuous loading or '401 Authorization Required'. I have used nslookup and got a response, and as far as I can tell the ports are forwarded correctly on the router, although I may be missing something. Would you perhaps know anything about this?

Hey WunderTech Would love if you can help answer this for me! If I connect to my NAS via DDNS and I am on my local network would I still be limited by the WAN speed? Or would it know to switch me over to local router LAN speeds? For example My NAS is connected via LAN arrogation but my WAN is only a gigabit connection but my LAN is 2gigabit.

thank you! The DDNS access is now ok! Can i use it to remotely access the git server installed on my synology now?

What is the "Dynamic IP address" for in the OpenVPN configuration? I've watched all the intermixed tutorial videos (DDNS, VPN, Initial Setup, specific router Por Forwarding instructions) and so far, the Synology external name only redirects me to the router's (not synology's) login page.

I don't really get the difference for accessing the NAS via QucikConnect, private DDNS or this Synology DDNS. Where are the pros and cons? What is recommended to set up?
