Upscaling Face-Off: PS5 Pro PSSR vs PC DLSS/FSR 3.1 in Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart

With PlayStation 5 Pro, consoles are embracing the reconstruction-based upscaling model that has made Nvidia DLSS in particular a must-have feature for the current era of gaming. PSSR is Sony's iteration and impressions thus far have been impressive - but what happens when we stack it up directly in like-for-like scenarios with AMD's existing FSR 3.1 technology along with Nvidia's state-of-the-art DLSS. This is only one game and one implementation, of course, but it's the toughest work-out for PSSR we could put together in the pre-launch period - and the results are generally impressive.

UE5 game devs seeing PSSR results: now we can lower the base resolution further to 480p and upscale it to 4K.

For a first iteration that consumers will have access to this is an impressive showing for PSSR. No other upscaler looked this good on launch. This means they are doing the basic things right.

One factor not mentioned here is that Ratchet & Clank was almost certainly a core part of the training data for PSSR. We've heard from devs that PSSR was tweaked over the last year or so to perform better on the games being prepared for the Pro launch. PSSR has made an impressive start in the games it was trained on: it will be interesting to see how that extrapolates into third party games converted later.

Really impressive considering it's PSSRs debut. They have said they will be improving and updating the technology as time goes on too and so there is a lot of leeway in how the games will improve

Excellent comparisons! Seems like for now: DLSS3 > PSSR > XeSS >> FSR3.
Considering this is the 1st iteration of PSSR, it's extremely impressive!!

It's impressive how the first release of PSSR seems to be significantly better than the *third* iteration of FSR.

Seems to be holding its own against DLSS in its first iteration. No reason to use FSR going forward on PS5 Pro enhanced titles.

Well done, Alex. This video does a good job highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of PSSR. It being an upgrade in almost every aspect vs FSR is very good. I'd like to see how it compares to XeSS or TSR more once we see it in more games. I wonder who will win out of that bunch of upscalers.

Looks good. I just find it funny that AMD is taking so long at doing their own ML upscaler for Radeon GPUs that Sony has gone and done it themselves, and it's good.

I remember being pretty excited about upscaling in the beginning. The comparison videos all looked pretty impressive.
Then I played a new game and thought "Wait, why does this look like it has bad compression artifacts? I'm not playing remotely!"
I would describe the whole look as "last-gen, for a generation that never existed". It's a step back.

For what is essentially a 1.0 version this is pretty good. Surely they will update it over time

I regret you guys are not calling it "pisser" anymore :(

i always hated how fsr looked on ps5 hopefully they can replace every instance of it with pssr this would be a gamechanger

Still cannot believe how stunning R&C is. Looks like a movie you can control

FSR is definitely the worst, DLSS is clearly the best, and PSSR is a bit below DLSS.Considering that it is a relatively new technology it is not bad at all, it just needs time to improve. We are seeing that these upscaling technologies will be present for a long time in the future of gaming.

Better image quality then FSR is a game changer because it’s essentially going to look better than graphics mode on base PS5

I love the fact that PSSR can reconstruct checkerboard images properly. This is a big deal for so many games that were designed with that rendering technique in mind.

Because we have you guys. Developers and game companies are being held to higher quality standards for games, which is a phenomenal thing going forward in gaming. Thank you!

Just keep in mind that it took around 6 years for DLSS to be where it's at now. It's still early days and the pro isn't even out, yet. I'm pretty sure PSSR is going to evolve over time and it already looks miles better than FSR.

The era or FSR is hopefully finally gone, well, at least on the Pro model.
Quite insane for a 1.0 version. No one was expecting it to beat DLSS but it isn´t that far and that software has years of advantage on the field. Well done, Sony.
