I actually really like how Alliser argues his point against Jon. He doesn't refute Jon's prowess, bravery or his leadership ability. He argues based on his prejudice against the Wildlings, which is a valid point if you share his opinion. Jon's afinity for both Mance and Ygritte are valid points of concern if you as a Night Watch member stand against the Wildlings, and they had just fought a hard fight against them.

It would be like the US nominating a President right after WW 2 who had known Hitler closely and who had a German Ex-Wife. He might have fought the nazis, but it's still a valid point of concern if you are prejudiced against those type of relations. Not saying Alliser is right, of course he isn't, i'm just saying his rhetoric is sound and reasonable.

Never really noticed before that Alliser isn't laughing at Janos' insults to Sam. Hates him, but by that point probably found out he killed the Thenn warg and can't quite call him a coward anymore.

Sir Aliser may not have liked Jon for the fact his father was Ned Stark but he did admire his bravery and courage to speak the truth even if he meant going against higher ups. Aliser wasn't corrupt or evil, he was a man who truly believed the wildlings were their enemy, can't say he's evil but he doesn't respect cowardice which is why he lost total respect for Slynt.

Book facts:

Janos tries to kiss ass to Stannis and Stannis delivers a flaming worse than Sam's to him, stating that any of the other members would be a better claimant for the position of Lord Commander(which Janos was trying for, not Thorne, as no one voted for Thorne because of how miserable they made him). Stannis says that anyone would be better, even the cook Hobb(who was put forward as a joke). Stannis also states openly that Slynt extorted from the rest of the City Watch and when Slynt says nothing was proven, Stannis adds that two watch members were willing to come forward and testify died on their rounds. Robert said that the person who came next might be worse, so better the devil you know, but Stannis took it as "Little fingers words in Roberts mouth).

Rather than Sam giving a speech, the vote is MUCH cooler. This is like an attempt to draw out the suspense, but Jon's vote goes over much better. The two Commanders of the Shadow Tower and Eastwatch By The Sea both take part, Ser Denys Mallister and Cotter Pyke. Denys is highborn and a Mallister, Cotter Pyke is a bastard and from the Iron Islands, so they already have a bit of hatred even without liking each other politically. The two are of a mind to vote for Slynt if they can't win(rather than let their rival take control). However, Sam manipulates the two by lying and saying that Jon could take the reins after showing his leadership(with Pyke thinking a bastard in command would annoy Denys)and says that Stannis will force the Nights Watch to vote for their rival if they don't vote soon.

Jon Snow has the largest amounts of votes, which drowns out all the other claimants tokens.

PS:There's also a bit with the Lord Commanders pet Raven landing on Jon, which surprises everyone(as it went missing beyond the Wall)and it says his name, which brings more to Jons side).


he book had a better vote scene for Jon being Lord Commander, with Sam manipulating the other two Commanders(who despise each other, one being a highborn Mallister and the other being a bastard from Pyke)into voting for Jon(as they were ready to vote for Slynt rather than the other claimant)by lying and saying Stannis would going to force the Watch to choose their rival.
