Between 1870 and 1973, the entire polar bear population of Svalbard was almost eradicated through hunting—almost 30,000 were killed. Today, polar bear numbers are climbing, but they face a new threat: climate change. And with the Arctic warming at a rate that’s twice as fast as elsewhere, the situation is becoming critical.

Go to west Alaska . Polar bears rarely have to hunt on floating pack ice with cubs who face the risk of drowning . Sea lions and seals now have to come closer to shore or to the shore . Polar bears have a far easier hunt than before regardless of what people are taught to believe .

As data shows, the overwhelming majority of polar bear populations are stable or growing. In addition, polar bears, have been in their present form surviving 2 previous interglacials. Climate change will not affect their ability to survive and thrive. Man, on the other hand, could wreak havoc.
