Catechism of the Catholic Church - Paragraph 2003 :

Grace is first and foremost the gift of the Spirit who justifies and sanctifies us. But grace also includes the gifts that the Spirit grants us to associate us with his work, to enable us to collaborate in the salvation of others and in the growth of the Body of Christ, the Church. There are sacramental graces, gifts proper to the different sacraments.

There are furthermore special graces, also called charisms after the Greek term used by St. Paul and meaning "favor, " "gratuitous gift, " "benefit."53 Whatever their character - sometimes it is extraordinary, such as the gift of miracles or of tongues - charisms are oriented toward sanctifying grace and are intended for the common good of the Church. They are at the service of charity which builds up the Church.

For some reason, I have what is known as the Gift of Tears. It only manifests itself when I gaze upon the Eucharist at church. What I don’t understand is why God gave it to me. I’m just a normal person with Asperger Syndrome who is trying my hardest to get up in the world.

What he was talking about "gifts", I think I was taught as "fruit of the Spirit"...Do Catholics teach a private prayer language (tongues) in private prayer/worship (Paul said praying int he Spirit, or with the tongues of angels...)? We were also taught possessing the Holy Spirit at Salvation, and RECEIVING the "Baptism of the Holy Spirit" Jesus doing the baptizing, usually subsequent to SALVATION. Would a charismatic Catholic Mass allow a message in tongues with interpretation in corporate worship?

Those who don't operate in these gifts obviously cannot throw much light on it.

I was baptized in the Holy Spirit in New Orleans when I was 22 and pregnant the first time around and I felt nothing at all. Come this year in January, I attended a Woman's charismatic retreat in Louisiana with my now 30 year old daughter and boy did I receive in what they called refilling of the Spirit. I felt, and I felt like no other time the presence of the Lord in my life. He revealed to me that the gift of tongues was going to be delivered to everyone. I like most, didn't think the gift of tongues was all that important nor did I know much about it. Well, my testimony has totally changed.

I use my gift in private when I pray at home. I don't care to show it off and that is OK. Like most here, I will never fall either no matter how much some push for this to happen. That is what steered me away from the Catholic Charismatic movement a bit over 30 years ago. I was terrified of falling when hands were imposed on me. Well the Holy Spirit understands us more than we think. You will not experience what you don't want plain and simple. The Lord, our God, is very respectful of what we can and cannot do. He will not ever push. I learned that this time around. I was obedient and when the gift was delivered to 100% of us there, I accepted it because it was His will. Some ladies felt nothing. That doesn't mean God didn't deliver. That means we are not ready to accept His gift and that is OK too. The leaders in the group gave it their all (100%) so that all present would receive the gift of tongues. The gift of tongues is indeed a lesser gift as it opens the portal to receive the other gifts as it was explained to me. God delivers 100%. The gifts are dormant for whenever there comes a time that we are ready to allow the Holy Spirit to teach us how to use them and when. God does not give in increments or less than 100%. We should all know this by now. We can't or are unable to understand or receive his total deliverance which is very different.

All you have to do is google seach every bible verse with tongues in it, and you will have your answer. Ill give you a hint about what i found. It is a couple different things... bible says he hearers HEARD in thier own languages.. just read acts. Then it speaks about how paul speaks in tongues in later books... seems like its an unintelligble language from those verses that one would speak in private prayer. Then im pretty sure i read in a verse that angels speak in tongues, and that te spirit within speaks in tongues for us automatically basically. Then of corse im sure some people in the church can speak in natural tongues from having learned them which is not considered a super natural gift, but would probably fall under some sort of gift.
