Poverty: What did Jesus Preach?
What does the Church Teach?
LECTURE

To continue the conversation check out our STM Online: Crossroads courses:

September 23, 2014
Presenter: Kenneth Himes, O.F.M.

From the first century through today, the Christian community has wrestled with the realities of the poor among us. Be it material or spiritual, voluntary or involuntary, relative or absolute poverty, many have argued that to be human is to be poor. This lecture explores how compassion for the poor reflects an acceptance of our own humanity and that of others, and is ultimately a key element of our journey to know Christ.

Cosponsored by The Church in the 21st Century Center, the School of Theology and Ministry,
and the Boston College Theology Department

Kenneth Himes, O.F.M., is associate professor of theology in the Boston College Theology Department. A Franciscan priest and moral theologian, he is the author of Christianity and the Political Order: Conflict, Cooptation, and Cooperation (Orbis Books, 2013), and Responses to 101 Questions on Catholic Social Teaching (Paulist Press, 2013).

After reading today's Gospel in Matthew 13 where Jesus states that "some have eyes, but do not see, " added to my increasing frustration with the churches in the small, yet quite affluent area of multi-million dollar beach-front homes and gated communities in my area - I live in a converted double-wide so am not a part of that, nor desire to be after working with the poor in the Philippines twenty years ago. But the nearly total lack of any Ministries to the Poor and lack of concern for the poor here, I find myself to feel hypocritical about attending service in any of the churches here. For better or worse, I am not Catholic, but have experienced that the Catholic Church here is just like the other churches in the area. But GOD, is my Christian journey frustrated by the blindness to the poor, the needy, the homeless. Pray for me. ps. I really needed your message this morning!

I love his speech.
And also, Pauly (pardon me Bob) has this beautiful NY Italian mafia accent from Goodfellas.
Bob makes me think of Pauly (Goodfellas), “slicing the garlic so thin that it melts in your mouth.”🤭

Hello

The gospel is the gospel of the kingdom!

Jesus is going to return and set up the kingdom of God ON THE EARTH! God’s government ON THE EARTH! Believers will rule the nations with Jesus! The Messiah died for his people! God resurrected the Messiah! The Messiah will resurrect his people at his coming! They will rule the nations! The destiny of the Messiah and his people is to be ON THE EARTH! The renewed restored earth! God also dwelling with them! Rev 21

Matt 24
14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

Jesus said the Father is the only true God!

John 17
3 And this is eternal life, that they know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent.
