I guess I was lucky. My first project I had (got?) to replace a two million dollar scheduling system that was taking 25 minutes to make a simple scheduling change. I rewrote it from scratch in VB5 and got that time down to about 6 seconds. I was the sole programmer, but not the designer. I wrote a lot of new software after that over the next 10 years. But the past 10 years has become boring with maintaining systems other companies created. I still squeeze out a utility here and there I suppose.

Thanks man! This is useful. I got employed in the application development team but I was most of the time debugging a messy system (in my eyes). It is good to learn some debugging skills.
