Great clarification. To me it's a relief that programming isn't all about coding. I have spent many hours being frustrated and overwhelmed about what I have to know in terms of code.

My first internship as a junior developer was at this great enterprise that created apps for different schools. I can definitely confirm software engineering is definitely not what I thought it was. Exactly like you stated: lots of emails, brainstorm meetings, a whole lot of research, reading of documentations on how to operate an API and access data you need from a specific system, and a whole lot of politics. Literally everyone (people who aren't even from your department) has an idea of how the problem you're trying to solve should be solved, even though it's not entirely your choice to make, they still look at you since you're the one actually implementing it.

I would say the coding part is usually at the end when everyone has come to an agreement on what should be done and how, and then the cycle repeats. I'm happy I got to experience that so soon. I got to realize soft skills are 100% what's going to make you prosper in your profession as a software engineer. You can be an OK programmer but absolutely proficient in your soft skills and you will be able to rise way higher in the company than if it was the other way around.

Is it true that it takes more time to become backend then frontend developer?

I guess I'll never experience being a developer, since I've been trying to make MVC5 application for months now but I'm failing horribly. It's just so hard. All of my classmates already got jobs or internships and I'm still stuck at home like a loser.
